Mangaluru: ‘Revenge’ tourists rush to northeast, Goa, Kodagu as curbs eased

MANGALURU: Despite warnings from the government, doctors, public health experts, "revenge tourism" is gaining momentum as various states ease lockdown restrictions. Mangalureans are heading to Kashmir, the northeast and closer home, to Goa - some hitting the road as soon as their second shot is done, others keen to make a dash before a possibe third wave.

The health concerns notwithstanding, the tourist rush at beachside hotels, hill homestays and resorts has breathed a fresh lease of life into the Covid-hit hospitality sector.

"Hotels in Kullu-Manali are completely booked. Mangalureans are also looking at various destinations in northeastern states, Goa and Kashmir. Locally, Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru are popular. Despite third wave fears, people are willing to travel," said William D'Souza, managing director of Globe Travels.

Citizens from the coastal city are driving to Goa, Chikkamagaluru and Kodagu districts for short holidays as Kerala is yet to ease travel restrictions. Biker and travel enthusiast Sanjay Kamath said many of his friends are travelling to these tourist spots after the state government announced unlock measures. "I am planning to travel after I get my second dose," he said.

Those in the travel and tourism industry say revenge travel will only gather more pace as domestic and international travel restrictions are lifted. Eulalia D'Souza of Lia Travels and Tours said many are waiting for air travel to resume to book their tickets. Currently, the most preferred international destination among Kudlaites is Dubai, which is likely to open soon.
