MANGALURU: The garbage issue triggered a ruckus in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council meeting chaired by mayor Premanand Shetty on Saturday.
Corporators from Congress in the opposition brought to the notice of the council that many public places in the city have been turned into garbage black spots. "People have been throwing waste by roadside due to the failure of contractors who conduct door-to-door waste collection," said opposition leader A C Vinayaraj.
Corporators Praveenchandra Alva and Naveen D'Souza blamed sanitary inspectors of not monitoring waste collection in the city. They also noted that many of the compactors and other waste transportation vehicles of the contractors Antony Waste Handling Cell are not in good condition.
Vociferous arguments also led to Congress members entering the well of the house and holding a protest for a few minutes. However, the mayor from BJP members managed to convince the opposition and said the issue of black spots was not new to the city corporation.
"We have been witnessing people dumping waste in public places even when Congress was in power. We have brought several reformations in the waste management in the past seven months. Our team has been identifying all black spots and clearing them. Further, CCTV cameras have been installed at many places to penalise those who throw waste by the roadside. The issue started after waste segregation at source was made mandatory," the mayor said.
