The old-school Lido theatre played its last scene on Thursday, with a Japanese manga movie. The cinema, which has a storied history, opened 50 years ago, on June 21, 1968.
Following the end of its contract with Chulalongkorn University's Property Management Office, which plans to develop this area of Siam Square, Apex Group, which ran the cinema, will spend the next four months moving out the projection equipment and other equipment to a new location, where it will be stored. Over 20 staff will be involved in the effort, which hopes to preserve a little of the cinema's past.
The curtain came down with the last showing of the Japanese manga movie, Kids on the Slope.
At 11.30pm, when the film ended, Lido's staff and managers lined up like a guard of honour to wai and thank the audiences for coming to the cinema, which on its last night was packed.
