Mandi: BJP may field Kargil hero

SHIMLA: The BJP is likely to field Kargil hero Brig Khushal Thakur (Retd) against Pratibha Singh of the Congress from Mandi parliamentary seat. While it will be Pratibha Singh’s fifth election from Mandi, for Brig Thakur, it will be his maiden contest.

BJP is yet to make an official announcement, but sources said Brig Thakur’s name has been finalised and he has been asked to reach Mandi to file nomination papers on Thursday in the presence of CM Jai Ram Thakur. Besides Thakur, BJP’s state election committee had sent the names of former MP Maheshwar Singh, Nihal Chand, Ajay Rana and Pankaj Jamwal for the seat. Later, Mahila Morcha state president Dhaneshwari Thakur’s name was also being considered.

In 2019 parliamentary elections, Brig Thakur had emerged as a front-runner for the party ticket.
