Mandarin Oriental’s latest hotel just opened in Mallorca – and you can book eclipse experiences now

All eyes are on Spain (and Iceland… and Greenland…) this summer as the country is set to see a total solar eclipse in August.

And if you’re looking to experience the celestial event in swish digs, you might just want to book yourself a stay at the newly opened Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra, Mallorca.

Located in Calvià on the island’s southwest coastline, you won’t be able to see the eclipse from the hotel itself, according to the Visit Palma website. You can, however, book yourself in for one of the hotel’s ultra-exclusive eclipse experiences.

Just 15 people will get to experience the sunset eclipse from a hot air balloon, but you can also book in for a helicopter flight or see the world plunge into darkness for just over a minute and a half from a private yacht.

Of course, there are plenty of other reasons to book in for a stay before and after the event...

Inside Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra, Mallorca

The third property from the brand in Spain – after the Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona and Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid – the site was once home to the Hotel Punta Negra.

The new-look 131-key resort is meant to blend contemporary design with Mediterranean spirit while showcasing the island's natural beauty and heritage.

After arriving via an exclusive private yacht transfer service, guests will enjoy spectacular sea views from across the rooms and suites plus restaurants and bars.

As with all Mandarin Oriental properties, the spa is a real highlight. You can make use of the hydromassage pool, steam room and cold plunge, or book in for a massage or facial.

Plus, there are two outdoor pools for guests, as well as a fitness centre.

With restaurants from world-class chefs, we can’t think of a good reason to leave the resort once you step inside.

You’ll be able to try Nobu-style Japanese cuisine at Matsuhisa, or enjoy open-fire cooking at Spanish steakhouse Leña by Dani García.

For Mexican plates, head to Jacinta; for dishes that celebrate the Mediterranean and Spanish Riviera, try Leppoc; and for classic tapas plates, it’s all about Sobretaula. Those relaxing by the pool can also grab a drink at Thalos.
