Mancunians endure another sleepless night after region battered by thunder and lightning

Greater Manchester has experienced yet another night of stifling heat and tropical thunderstorms.

After a humid day, with temperatures up to 30C on Wednesday, the night brought more thunder and lightning across the region.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been in place across the country since Monday, after a heatwave sweeped the UK.

Temperatures above 34C were recorded for the sixth day in a row in parts of southern England, for the first time since at least 1961.

On Monday evening,  Greater Manchester experienced 'heat lightening'  - which meant no thunder and rain - just sharp bolts of light.

It is thought to be caused from a distant thunderstorm which is too far away to hear the thunder.

And on Wednesday afternoon into the evening, Mancunians were treated to the full works of rain, thunder and lightning.

In Standish in Wigan, fire crews were called after lightning struck a house, leaving plug sockets blown off the wall.

Elsewhere, Cheshire Police said on Twitter they were dealing with a number of weather-related incidents in the village of Tarporley.

Officers were called to fallen trees, and flash flooding and advised nearby residents to avoid all but essential travel.

Train services between Manchester Piccadilly and Stoke on Trent had to be cancelled after lightning damaged the signalling system.

Three people died in a train derailment in Aberdeenshire after a ScotRail service crashed on Wednesday amid heavy rain and flooding in Scotland.

British Transport Police (BTP) said those pronounced dead at the scene near Stonehaven included the train's driver, while six people were injured in the derailment.

Yellow thunderstorm warnings remain in place for much of the country, including Greater Manchester on Thursday.

Temperatures are still expected to reach the late twenties today, but thankfully, the sweltering heat is due to die off by Friday and into the weekend.
