Mancunians dazzled by string of lights in the skies above Greater Manchester

Bemused Mancunians took to social media to express astonishment this evening at a string of mysterious lights in the sky above the region.

While some Greater Manchester residents were concerned - one declaring that the lights in the sky were 'not right' - others were fascinated by the objects.

But far from being alien crafts planning a low-orbit invasion (haven't we got enough on our plate?) these were the latest batch of satellites launched by uber-boffin and entrepreneur Elon Musk's company SpaceX.

Mr Musk's company has been launching the satellites since last May and with the company getting approval to launch 12,000 satellites the 'train' of lights could become a relatively common sight in the skies above Britain.

Meanwhile many in the region were enjoying the free show.

Taylor emailed the M.E.N. with his picture of the phenomenon writing: "Sitting out in the garden tonight in Manchester city centre and just watched ‘31 planes’ fly overheard at once.

Turns out it’s a ‘Starlink’ by SpaceX - Elon Musks’ company in America."

And across Facebook residents of Greater Manchester were expressing their shock and delight at what they'd seen.

"Just watched them with the kids...amazing," wrote Carmen Speakman.

"Counted around 42 of them one after the other", said Andy Flanagan.

While others declared the sight of the satellites in the skies as variously 'eerie' and 'impressive'.

The mission of the project - which continues to be developed - is to provide remote locations across the world with low-cast internet.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has granted the company permission to fly 12,000 satellites as part of the project - and this number could eventually be increased to 30,000.

According to findastarlink.com, the Starlink satellites will be flying over the UK until April 24th.

You can enter your location to find the days and times they'll be most visible in your area.

You can also track the satellites using the Starlink app.

The Starlink app automatically calculates when the SpaceX Starlink satellites are expected to be visible above your current location.

When you open the app click a satellite number from the list provided and select your current location to reveal the visible times.

Results will display the start and end time of the sighting, the duration, directions for tracking, elevation co-ordinates and a visibility warning if the satellites will be hard to see.

There is also the option to set up 'remind me' alerts so you don't miss the chance to see Starlink.
