Mancunian spirit shines through as defiant city centre stands strong in wake of knife horror

Once again, Manchester has come together to stand strong in the wake of unthinkable violence in our city.

Less than 24 hours after the horrific knife attack at the Arndale, the shopping centre was back in business.

Shops, restaurants and stalls were reopened, and a sign above the covered walk-through on Market street read "MCR is open," with the all-familiar message "We ♥ MCR" written proudly below.

Manchester's strength, unity and defiance continues to shine through, and its thoughts remain very much with all those affected by what happened on Friday.

Four people were injured in the attack just before lunchtime.

A fifth was also treated by ambulance crews.

Thankfully, although serious, their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Speaking from inside the Arndale on Saturday morning, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham wished them all a 'speedy recovery'.

He added: "We have had high profile incidents but so has London and so have other cities across Europe.

"A lot of people come here for a lot of different reasons, it's a great city.

"Because of that, it brings extra pressure.

"It is very much business as usual today and great to see everyone returning.

"We are living in difficult times and it probably does mean we need to look out for each other and be extra vigilant but to people coming to the city it's a case of recognising we are not immune to the times we are living in."

Councillor Pat Karney shared a photo of the "MCR is open" sign on the Corporation Street side of the shopping centre.

The image was met with dozens of positive comments.

One simply read: "We are Mancunian. That's what we do."

GMP also tweeted to say there would be more police out and about in the city centre, urging people to say hello to officers out on patrol.

They added: "The Arndale shopping centre (and the rest of Manchester city centre) is open for business as normal today.

"Increased police presence around the city for reassurance but local businesses have returned to normality.

"Feel free to say hi to some of the officers out on patrol."
