Manchester Windrush Day celebration to be held at Alexandra Park this weekend

Manchester's Windrush Day celebrations will be held at Alexandra Park this weekend. On Saturday (June 25) the park will play host to a day of dancing, singing, delicious foods and talks from special guests as the community marks the arrival of Caribbean immigrants to the shores of Britain way back on 21 June 1948.

Organised by the Caribbean & African Health Network this year’s theme is focused on ‘our shared history, culture and heritage’. CAHN and partners are seeking to highlight the diversity of cultures that have contributed to the shared heritage of the UK today.

This event will include live cultural performances of, dancing and singing on the main stage, guest speakers, information stalls to promote services, community organisations and businesses. There would be an arts and craft section, a play area for children; food provided by food trucks and more entertainment throughout the day.

Dr Faye Bruce DL, chair of CAHN said: “Windrush Day recognises and commemorates Caribbean people who travelled to the UK to help build Britain after the Second World. For me, this is a day of reflection and should be honoured as a Bank Holiday where we focus our attention on the incredible contributions that this community has made to British Society.”

Charles Kwaku-Odoi, chief officer of CAHN said: “While we celebrate those incredible contributions of people migrated to the United Kingdom to build post-war Britain, we also remember many of this generation and their descendants have had their lives disrupted by unjust immigration policies over decades. We are glad the traumatic treatment has been acknowledged and a compensation scheme established, however we recognise that much more needs to be done.”

Windrush Day was introduced back in 2018 and is held every year on 22 June. The event will be taking place on Saturday, 25 th June from 12pm to 6pm at Alexandra Park, Manchester 180 Russell Street, Manchester, M16 7JL.
