Manchester weekend weather: Thunderstorms and heavy rain bringing an end to the sun

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are bringing an abrupt end to Greater Manchester's heatwave.

Temperatures have dipped significantly compared to earlier in the week and now stormy weather is moving in.

It does not come as good news for those hoping to spend time with loved ones this weekend, with the government now permitting groups of six to meet up but in outdoor areas.

Forecasters have said to expect increasing winds throughout Friday.

There will be scattered showers, as well as the odd sunny spell.

The showers could be heavy or thundery at times.

It will feel chilly, with temperatures reaching highs of around 14C.

Overnight the showers will ease for a time, before heavy rain pushes south across the region.

It will remain windy, with temperatures dipping to around 6C.

Once the overnight rain clears, Saturday morning will see a mixture of sunshine and showers across the region.

Thunder is also possible, as the showers turn heavy.

Winds will remain strong.

Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 17C.

Forecasters have said Sunday will be a repeat performance, with further outbreaks of rain and breezy conditions.

The rain will dry up by Monday and the winds will ease.

However, it will be very cloudy with temperatures around 16C.

Further heavier rain will arrive again on Tuesday and it will feel somewhat cooler.

Unfortunately, Met Office forecasters have said the sunny weather is not expected to make a return any time soon.

A statement on the Met Office website said the early period of June will be "unsettled", with the south of the UK more likely to see sunshine.

Its said: "Through the second week of June, there will be a mixture of sunny spells and showers across many parts. The showers will be most frequent in the north and east, along with some longer spells of rain.

"The best of the drier conditions should be seen in the south and west, with plenty of sunny spells.

"Temperatures should increase towards the end of the week, although it will feel windy at times.

"Towards the middle of June, changeable conditions should continue with further showers and perhaps longer spells of rain, mostly confined to the north and east."
