Manchester weather: Yellow alert warning of thunderstorms and torrential rain issued

A weather alert warning of the risk of thunderstorms, torrential rain and lightning has been issued for Greater Manchester.

The yellow weather warning is in place from 3pm on Sunday until 12am on Monday.

According to the Met Office website there is the risk of flooding in some areas and disruption to travel.

The yellow warning covers most of the UK, including the whole of the North West, as well as the North East, East Midlands, London, Wales and the South West.

A weather system is moving north-eastward across the UK on Sunday afternoon, bringing with it a deluge of rain.

The rainshowers could turn thundery at times, particularly on Monday afternoon.

There could be 20mm to 30mm of rain in some areas in an hour, while close to 40mm may fall in two or three hours.

The Met Office warn there is a small chance some houses and business could be flooded quickly.

Forecasters also warn the floodwater could damage to buildings caused by floodwater, hail, strong winds or lighting strikes.

The lighting strikes could lead to power cuts and the loss of other services.

Drivers are also being advised to take care due to spray on the roads.

A statement on the Met Office website said: "Spells of rain are expected to affect many areas at times from Sunday afternoon and into Monday, moving north-northeastward and perhaps turning thundery at times in some places.

"Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms may also develop between bands of rain, particularly on Monday afternoon.

"Where thunderstorms do develop, 20 to 30 mm rain may fall locally in an hour, and close to 40 mm of rain may fall in two or three hours."

However, it is not all doom and gloom in the Manchester forecast, as there is going to be a bit of sunshine before the thunderstorms hit.

Temperatures will be above average on Friday and Saturday accompanied by pleasant sunny spells.

Friday will be mostly dry with sunny spells and temperatures reaching highs of 17C.

For Saturday and the start of Sunday it will be sunny and warm with highs of 21C to 22C.

However, it will turn unsettled on Sunday afternoon and for the whole of Monday.
