There was a light sprinkling of snow in some parts of Greater Manchester overnight while ice is causing treacherous driving conditions on the Snake Pass.

The route remains open however conditions are said to be worsening between Ladybower Reservoir and Hurst Road.

There are also reports of hazardous conditions on the A628 Woodhead Pass, particularly over the summit, due to snow.

A yellow weather alert warning of ice has been issued by the Met Office.

It remains in place until 10am on Tuesday morning.

Forecasters warn there could be some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces, while ice patches could form on some untreated roads.

According to the Met Office there could be more wintry showers later today, particularly in hilly areas.

There could also be spells of hail or sleet.

However, there could be some brighter spells in the gaps between the showers.

Temperatures are expected to reach highs of 6C.

The wintry showers will continue through the evening and ice patches are likely to form.

Overnight temperatures are expected to plummet to 0C.

Met Office spokesman Oli Claydon said: "Pretty much most of Manchester will be in the ice warning area which is in place from 7pm to 10am the next morning.

"There will be showers of rain, hail and sleet with the risk of ice on some surfaces. It is possible there might be some snow mixed up in that as well, but probably the risk is just in areas above 200m."
