Manchester weather: Met Office issues heavy rain warning as heatwave comes to abrupt end

The Manchester heatwave is going to come to an abrupt end this weekend with it set to lash it down tomorrow.

Forecasters at the Met Office have issued a yellow weather alert, warning of a spell of heavy rain in the region.

The weather warning is in place from 9am on Saturday until 3pm on Sunday.

There is a small chance there could be some flooding in some areas and disruption to public transport.

Spray and flooding could also lead to difficult driving conditions as well as road closures.

Hilly areas are more likely to see the heaviest bursts of rain.

A statement on the Met Office website said: "An area of heavy rain is expected to become slow moving across parts of northern England and perhaps southern Scotland on Saturday and Sunday.

"Rainfall accumulations of 40-60mm are likely, with perhaps as much as 80-120mm over high ground of the Pennines and North York Moors."

It follows the hottest day of the year so far in Greater Manchester on Thursday.

Temperatures are thought to have reached record breaking levels, hitting 35.3C just before 4pm.

But the warm weather was interrupted by a thunderstorm in some areas of the region overnight and rainshowers.

There are much cooler conditions as a result today, with temperatures expected to remain at around 25C.

It is expected to remain cloudy and it will feel much fresher.

On Saturday the rain will arrive later in the day and there could be some thunderstorms during the downpours.

The damp spell will continue into Sunday and there could be some more thundery showers.

By Monday it will be drier with sunny spells, but it will be slightly cooler than the previous week.
