A man has been charged over a knife attack at Manchester Victoria railway station on New Year's Eve.

Mahdi Mohamud, of Cheetham Hill, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder and one of possessing a document useful to a person committing an act of terrorism.

The 25-year-old will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on 12 June.

The attack took place at 9pm on 31 December, Greater Manchester Police said.

A couple, aged in their 50s, suffered multiple stab wounds that were serious but not life-threatening.

A British Transport Police officer was stabbed in the shoulder while apprehending the suspect using Tasers and CS spray.

The incident came less than two years after an Isis-inspired suicide bomber murdered 22 victims at nearby Manchester Arena.
