A Manchester venue is already asking clubbers to show Covid pass

A venue in Manchester is already asking clubbers to show Covid passes before they will be allowed through the door.

The government has said it wants to make vaccine passports mandatory for some settings - such as nightclubs - and crowded events from the autumn.

One venue chain, run by the Academy Music Group, has already started asking revellers for proof at the point of entry, the Mirror reports.

This chain runs the O2 Ritz on Whitworth Street in Manchester city centre.

Tonight (July 30), club night 'Ultimate Power' will go ahead with attendees being asked to show a Covid pass.

To get inside, clubbers must have had a negative Covid test, have existing antibodies or be fully vaccinated, with two doses of a jab.

Explaining the move, organisers said: "Whilst Covid-status certification might not be mandated by law right now, the latest government guidance states that venues such as ours - where people are likely to be in close proximity to others outside their household - are encouraged to use the NHS Covid pass to certify Covid status for all visitors."

Bosses said: "We understand we are asking our customers to follow extra steps at this point and we need you more than ever."

Earlier this month, Boris Johnson announced people attending nightclubs would be required to be fully vaccinated from the end of September.

"I can serve notice now that by the end of September when all over 18s will have had their chance to be double jabbed, we're planning to make full vaccination the condition of entry to nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather," the Prime Minister said.

"Proof of a negative test will no longer be enough."

It comes after the NHS app was upgraded to allow it to be used as a vaccine passport in the UK as well as abroad.

A section appeared on the app for "domestic" use in recent days, allowing people to get the NHS Covid Pass through testing, full vaccination, natural immunity or an exemption.

It states: “You may need to show your NHS Covid Pass at places that have chosen to use the service”.

But industry experts said the decision was an 'absolute shambles', 'devastating', and a 'chaotic u-turn' from the government that said just a week before that vaccine passports would not be a requirement.

Sacha Lord, Greater Manchester's night time economy adviser, said: "Let's not let the Government hide behind the narrative of 'nightclubs.'"

Quoting Mr Johnson, he added: "'Venues where large crowds gather' is too open ended. Live music venues, theatres, large bars, arenas, the list is endless.

"Where does this leave festivals or live music events for teenagers or children who aren't being vaccinated?

"With this one move, the Government appears to have wiped out live gigs for a whole generation who have already suffered hugely during this pandemic."
