Manchester United youngster James Garner responds to Fred comments

James Garner says he is intent on persuading more Manchester United teammates to share the same high opinion about him as Fred.

In an interview with Brazilian site Trivela in April, Fred said midfielder Garner 'impresses me the most' out of the United academy talents. "Not because he is in the same position as me, but he is a player who has an impressive vision of the game, has a huge future for United," Fred said.

"In addition to the impressive game vision, he always plays with his head up, has an impressive shot, an incredible pass. He is a player that I admire a lot."

Garner, 19, has started three times in the Europa League group stage for United this season and made three cameo appearances but has not played this calendar year. League One clubs expressed interest in signing him on loan in January but Garner stayed at United.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer belatedly recalled Garner to first-team training following the team's return to their Carrington training complex following the lockdown, along with Under-18 captain Teden Mengi.

"It was very nice to hear it," Garner told the club website. "When you see that kind of stuff, it makes you smile but it also makes you want to get better to show him, and not just him but everyone, that they can have the same opinion.

"The main goal is to get into the first team and, really, I'll take it from there. Each day, I'll try to impress and eventually try to get into the team."

Garner came on for his United debut as a late substitute at Crystal Palace last season and soon signed a new contract until 2022. He is expected to head out on loan next season after a sterling campaign with the Under-23s.
