Manchester United youngster Charlie Savage praised for 'incredible' feat during loan spell

Charlie Savage has been hailed as a “fantastic” asset by Forest Green Rovers boss Duncan Ferguson after covering more than 12 kilometres in Sunday’s shock 1-0 win over League One high-fliers Sheffield Wednesday.

The Manchester United youngster is on loan at the third-tier club until the end of the season having joined in January. Savage made his senior United debut in December 2021 but is yet to play competitively under Erik ten Hag despite decent friendly showings.

Savage netted his first senior goal earlier this month in a 3-1 defeat to Bristol Rovers and Everton legend Ferguson has praised the impact the 19-year-old has produced since his arrival at the bottom club.

"He’s been fantastic for me," Ferguson said of Savage to talkSPORT. "On Sunday [against Sheffield Wednesday], he covered more than 12 kilometres. He was wearing the vest that tracks his distance. That’s incredible.

"He’s 19-years old, what an engine he’s got. And he’s a good player." Savage is the son of former top-flight footballer and academy graduate Robbie, who let out a joyful reaction when he saw that his boy had scored for Forest Green while on punditry duty for BT Sport.

Ferguson likened his son to Robbie’s playing style, and hailed the fact that he was the player who covered the most distance at the weekend.

He continued: "He’s like his dad. Enthusiastic, runs around. He was the highest-distance player on Sunday so that just shows you the character of the kid." Savage has seven appearances for Forest Green, six of which have been starts.
