Manchester United would be making a familiar mistake in appointing potential interim candidate

Manchester United are looking for a new manager. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is no longer at the helm of the club and in his leaving statement, the club outlined their intention to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season.

A permanent manager is not out of the question, as United are interested in appointing Mauricio Pochettino and have had an approach rejected by his current club Paris-Saint Germain and he is reportedly open to leaving the French club mid-season.

However, if this tactic fails and PSG does not allow Pochettino to leave in the middle of the season, then it's back to the initial plan of appointing an interim manager, and there are a number of names under consideration.

Former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde is of interest to United but also Ralf Rangnick, who is famous for his work with RB Leipzig both in the dugout and as Director of Football.

But a rather rogue name that has been thrown into the mix, after United have reportedly spoken to former Lyon manager Rudi Garcia and I personally think if the club were to appoint him as manager they would be making a huge mistake in going for the wrong option again when there are a host of better options potentially available.

Garcia's only honours as a manager came while he was manager of Lille in the 2011/12 season where he secured a domestic double of the Ligue 1 title and Coupe de France, with a team that included Eden Hazard and Gervinho.

However, since then he has consistently been a manager who puts together what looks like a strong competitive team which looks like it will take the next step the following season only for the team to completely fall apart, which sounds strikingly similar to the situation that United found themselves under Solskjaer.

This has been the case at Roma, Marseille and Lyon but as interim manager, it is likely it would never get to that point. His football at his most recent job, Lyon, was highly uninspiring and failed to get the results, and with much of this season left to play it would cause problems in terms of securing results and also would limit player development.

If you want a clear example of Garcia's mishandling of players, Maxwell Cornet who is currently playing as a striker for Burnley and has five goals in seven games was played at left-back/left wing-back under the Frenchman and was highly underutilised.

But Cornet probably contributed for one of the only shining lights in Garcia's management and that was his undoing of Pep Guardiola in the Champions League.

The 3-1 win was enough to see Lyon through to the semi-final and knock City out of the Champions League in spectacular fashion, but the United fanbase and board shouldn't take too much from this result.

Solskjaer had a fantastic record against Guardiola, it was strangely good given the circumstances, having won against the Spaniard four times and lost 4 times, retaining a neutral record where others had failed to manage one.

However, like Solskajer, when you look at Garcia's career as a whole and also his tactics and management style, it paints the picture of an appointment that would be uninspiring and not get the most out of the current squad, so would be the wrong choice.
