Manchester United wonderkid Axel Tuanzebe's potential rated

Manchester United's failure to get into the Premier League top four, and therefore missing out on Champions League football, means that their 2018/19 campaign won't be fondly remembered.

When you look at the numbers, it's not hard to see why United ended up in the position they did and not amongst the likes of Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side conceded 54 league goals, which is more than any of the top nine Premier League clubs - and six more than Newcastle United.

A new central defender will likely be on United's shopping list this summer, but do they already have the solution in their ranks?

Defender Axel Tuanzebe has been in great form for Aston Villa this season, with the 21-year-old impressing at the centre of Villa's defence.

But just how good can Tuanzebe become?

And, will he become better than United's current defenders?

We used the highly respected Football Manager 2019 database to find out.

Manchester United might have already signed their next captain

Current ability: 125/200

Potential ability: 160/200

Tuanzebe is as highly regarded in Football Manager 2019 as he is in real-life.

The Aston Villa loanee has good physical, technical and mental attributes, making him a great defensive option when managing a club in-game.

The 21-year-old defender has been given a potential ability rating of -8 on the game, this means he could reach a potential ability of 160 out of 200.

To put that into context, United's highest rated defender on Football Manager 2019 is Victor Lindelof, who has a current ability of 150 out of 200, this means Tuanzebe has the potential to become the best defender at the club.

Of course, there's no guarantee that he will reach his full potential, as he's still a young player, but the signs are looking good for Tuanzebe.

United may well be shopping around for a new defender this summer, but they've already got one of the best young defenders in the country, according to Football Manager 2019.

Does he deserve a starting place at Old Trafford next season?
