Manchester United Women win promotion to Women's Super League with 5-0 victory over Aston Villa

Manchester United Women have won promotion to the Women's Super League with three games to spare after defeating Aston Villa 5-0 at Leigh Sports Village.

Goals from Millie Turner, Alex Greenwood, Jess Sigsworth, Ella Toone, Charlie Devlin rounded out the mauling for United after Villa played 40 minutes with an outfielder in goal as their goalkeeper was sent off and they didn't have a back-up on the bench.

United have earned their promotion at the first time of asking after being formed last summer and having a brilliant debut season in the Women's Championship.

With promotion secure United's next goal will be to go onto to claim their first ever league title.

Promotion is subject to meeting the license criteria of the league, but that shouldn't be a problem for United.

The win puts United seven points clear of their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur and should they beat Crystal Palace on Saturday they will be crowned champions.

United manager Casey Stoney spoke to the BBC about the prospect of winning her first promotion as manager before the game.

"When they came together last summer, they were effectively 21 strangers coming in to a room," Stoney said.

"It's quite incredible where we're at, in terms of the team togetherness. That's not by chance.

"We now are part of the club's history, the club's history-makers, these players and staff for season one.

"There was no pressure from the club to go up, but it looks like we're on track to do that.

"The mantra is very much that we crawl, we walk, we jog and then we run. It's a long-term project, but that long-term project hopefully leaves a legacy for this club forever."
