Manchester United Women sign former Man City defender Abbie McManus

Manchester United Women have announced the signing of former Manchester City defender Abbie McManus.

The 26-year-old has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Casey Stoney's side for the 2019/20 season.

McManus spent five years at City where she won the Super League, FA Cup and League Cup before announcing she would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

McManus, from Prestwich, said she was delighted to have joined Stoney's side as they embark on their first campaign in the top tier.

"Over the moon to join Man United Women, my childhood dream has come true," she tweeted. "Super excited to start my journey with this club."

She becomes the second signing of the summer for United following the announcement that Netherlands international Jackie Groenen had signed a pre-contract with the club to join from FFC Frankfurt.

Earlier in the month United announced Charlie Devlin, Naomi Hartley, Lucy Roberts and Ebony Salmon had all been released and MEN Sport understands more signings are in the pipeline during the summer.

"We've been looking at recruitment since before Christmas, we know we need to add a bit more depth to our squad, as and when we go up we need to strengthen. But I'm not big on wholesale changes, it'll be two or three, real high-quality players," Stoney told MEN Sport.

Both McManus and midfielder Groenen will be in France this summer competing in the Women's World Cup.
