Manchester United Women announce signing of France international ahead of new WSL season

Manchester United Women have announced the signing of France international Aissatou Tounkara.

The 27-year-old, who helped her country reach the semi-finals of the European Championship last month, has joined the club on a two-year deal from Atletico Madrid. She has spent the last four years applying her trade in Spain, and will add a wealth of quality and experience to Marc Skinner's side.

She has become United Women's seventh signing of the summer, following the recent arrivals of Rachel Williams from Tottenham Hotspur and England international Nikita Parris from Arsenal. The club will hope that their newest recruits will help them qualify for the Champions League this coming season, after narrowly missing out last time around.

On completing her move to the club, Tounkara told United's club website : "I am very happy and honoured to join such a prestigious team as Manchester United. I can't wait to start this new challenge and join my team-mates."

United boss Skinner added: "Aissatou is a player we had been monitoring for a while and are delighted to now bring her to the football club. She will offer vital Champions League and European competition experience to our younger players, and a real maturity to our all-round defensive play.

"We now look forward to embedding Aissatou into our squad during pre-season."

Confidence is likely to be high within the United camp ahead of the new Women's Super League [WSL] campaign getting under way next month, with Reds trio Mary Earps, Ella Toone and Alessia Russo having all played formidable roles in helping England win the European Championship this summer.

United will get their season under way when they travel to Tottenham on Saturday, September 10.
