Manchester United winger Tahith Chong set for loan move to Birmingham City

Birmingham City are set to win the race to sign Tahith Chong on loan from Manchester United.

The 21-year-old winger returned to pre-season training at Carrington earlier this week but is set for another campaign on loan.

Chong spent the start of last season on loan at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, before a January switch to Club Brugge in Belgium.

He has options abroad again this season, as well as interest from other clubs domestically, but is looking set for a move to Birmingham City on a season-long loan and the chance to get a regular taste of football in the Championship.

Chong signed a new contract at Old Trafford in June 2020, with United having to fight off competition from clubs on the continent to secure the future of the highly-rated Dutch winger.

He's made 16 appearances for United, the last of which was in the second leg of the Europa League tie against LASK Linz in August 2020.

The Holland Under-21 international made 15 appearances for Werder Bremen between August 2020 and January 2021, but started just four Bundesliga games before switching to Club Brugge, where he made a further 10 appearances.

Chong currently has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, although United have the option of a further year. He joined the club from Feyenoord in 2016 and won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award in 2019 and the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year award in 2019.
