Manchester United win battle over neutral venue for Premier League fixture

Manchester United will play Sheffield United at Old Trafford later this month after plans to move the game to a neutral venue were shelved.

The fixture was included on a list of six games that were set to be played on neutral territory released last week by Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts of South Yorkshire Police, the UK's football policing lead.

But United officials were surprised at seeing the game against the Blades included on the list and hadn't been informed it would need to be moved.

It is understood the game had been included because of trouble at a game between the two clubs more than a decade ago. Greater Manchester Police included that game, and two Manchester City fixtures at the Etihad, as games that might need to be moved after being asked to assess the risks around all remaining home Premier League fixtures due to be played by the two clubs.

Last Friday the force said the games now needed "further consideration" and that GMP would work with clubs and the relevant Safety Advisory Groups (SAG) to assess if they could be played at the intended locations.

Following further discussions, United have now been given the green light to host Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday, June 24. The game will kick-off at 6pm and will be shown live on Sky Sports.

The fixture could be crucial in the battle for Champions League qualification next season, with Chris Wilder's side the surprise package of the Premier League season so far.

The only two fixtures that are still earmarked as potentially needing to be moved to neutral venues are Everton v Liverpool, on Sunday, June 21, and Manchester City v Liverpool, on Thursday, July 2.
