That’s all from San Jose. Thanks for following along with us and be sure to check in throughout the pre-season friendly schedule for further minute-by-minute coverage. And here’s Jamie Jackson’s match report.

Updated

Full-time: San Jose Earthquakes 1-3 Manchester United

And there’s the final whistle! Juan Mata is no doubt man of the match. A classy performance today by the 27-year-old from Spain.

90 min: Coming down the homestretch here. Lots of positives for Manchester United even if there hasn’t been an excess of action here in the second half.

88 min: United content to play out the string here. A San Jose player appears to simulate a dive in an attempt to draw a foul but it’s not given.

85 min: A cure for insomnia this half’s been.

82 min: The United corner is cleared harmlessly, but they regain possession almost immediately and begin probing up the flanks.

81 min: A corner for United with roughly 10 minutes to go. Pereira looks keen to take it.

79 min: Overlapping run by a Manchester United player and it’s been broken up quite easily.

77 min: Free kick for San Jose on their half of the field.

74 min: Bit of a rough patch for both sides here, particularly Man United, who are struggling to sustain an attack.

71 min: Tonight’s match officially a sellout with an announced attendance of 18,000.

68 min: Recent signing Mark Pelosi, who spent a few years in Liverpool’s academy, gets a golden opportunity to pull one back for San Jose, but he sends it soaring above the crossbar.

62 min: Khari Stephenson on for San Jose goal-scorer Fatai Alashe.

GOAL! San Jose Earthquakes 1-3 Manchester United (Pereira, 60 min)

What’s been a quiet second half is given a sharp jolt as Jesse Lingard’s cross is headed into the back of the net by an onrushing Andreas Pereira. A perfectly timed, precision goal.

The 19-year-old re-opens Manchester United’s lead to two goals.

Updated

57 min: Sean from Philadelphia asks why Fellaini is not seeing time for United tonight. My guess is it’s because the Belgian is suspended for the first three games of the Premier League season and there’s less of an imperative to make sure he’s match fit.

54 min: Excellent play from Manchester United here. Incisive passing, making San Jose chase.

51 min: United awarded a free kick when Jesse Lingard is taken down on the outside of the box, but nothing comes of it.

47 min: The Earthquakes’ half-time substitutions include Koval in for Wynne, Renato in for Goodson, Silva in for Bernardez, Francis in for Stewart, Pelosi in for Pierazzi, Coutadeur in for Garcia, Thompson in for Cato, Barrera in for Salinas and Sherrod in for Amarikwa.

46 min: And the second half is under way with San Jose attacking now from left to right. Fast-paced start for both sides.

Van Gaal confirmed at the pre-match press conference that he’d be deploying the same second-half lineup for tonight’s match as he did for the tour opener against Club America in Seattle. That means we should be seeing the following team shortly: Johnstone; McNair, Smalling, Evans, Blackett; Bastian, Herrera; Lingard, Pereira; Januzaj, Wilson.

Half-time: San Jose Earthquakes 1-2 Manchester United

Expect wholesale changes from United after that first half, which saw the Premier League powerhouse look for the most part in form and impressive.

Updated

45 min: Memphis to Mata on the quick counterattack, with Mata taking a shot directly at Johnson, who deflects it away.

44 min: Immediate chance for United in response to the surprise goal but Johnstone stands tall.

GOAL! San Jose Earthquakes 1-2 Manchester United (Alashe, 42 min)

How about this! A monster of a run by Shea Salinas, who beats a gambling Morgan Schneiderlin and scurries with the ball along the goal line long enough to find 21-year-old Fatai Alashe, who takes advantage of Phil Jones being woefully out of position and sweeps it into the back of the net. Out of nowhere.

Updated

39 min: San Jose looking a bit shell-shocked here. United still applying a reasonable amount of pressure.

GOAL! San Jose Earthquakes 0-2 Manchester United (Depay, 36 min)

Pressure from Rooney leads to an abysmal giveaway from a San Jose defender deep in the Earthquakes’ own final third. The ball falls to Memphis Depay, who – presuming he didn’t in fact score tonight’s first goal – now surely has his first goal in the Manchester United shirt.

Updated

GOAL! San Jose Earthquakes 0-1 Manchester United (Mata, 32 min)

A pristine pass from Rooney to Young, who feeds to Mata just outside the area. Then it’s Mata who uncorks a shot that appears to possibly grace the foot of Depay closer to the goal. Ultimately, it’s awarded to Mata. A wonderful team goal.

30 min: Two half-chances by United, both blocked away by San Jose. Mata has really been the straw that stirs the drink for the Red Devils today.

27 min: Mata finds Young on the overlapping run in the box, and Young’s cross is swallowed up rapidly by Bingham.

25 min: It’s gotten a bit rudderless here both ways. Not completely unusual for a friendly of the pre-season (for United) or mid-week (for San Jose) variety.

22 min: San Jose dispossessed in midfield and a slightly more assertive United move into attack, but it’s again broken up by the Earthquakes’ back four.

20 min: Casual pace here. Shaw makes a nice overlapping run and fires a cross into the box into the general vicinity of Memphis Depay, but it’s headed out by San Jose’s Jordan Stewart and the threat is averted.

18 min: Corner kick into the box is easily punched away by Johnstone.

17 min: San Jose wins a corner.

16 min: A few inspired moments and half-chances here from United but no shots on goal. Now it’s San Jose with possession, playing it backward to move forward.

12 min: Chants of U-S-A! U-S-A! from the crowd. Natch.

10 min: United trying to attack quickly, but they’re dispossessed thanks to an errant pass. And San Jose gives it right back.

9 min: A long through ball from Shaw up the left-hand side breaks the Earthquakes open. The ball is crossed into the box where it nearly finds the feet of three United players, but their well-timed runs were in vain as no one can put a shot on goal. Still, a moment of genuine peril there.

7 min: Not much happening early, a tad sloppy from both sides. Aside from the early chance San Jose more than holding their own, but they can ill afford a slip-up here.

4 min: Ball dumped into the box for a San Jose attacker but it’s Phil Jones who quickly snuffs out the attack. Then a nice build-up for United, with the ball ending up at the feet of Memphis Depay, who makes a few moves during a run into the box before uncorking a right-footed shot that forces the keeper to make a hair-trigger save.

Updated

3 min: San Jose now keeping the ball and building some confidence here. No substantial chances for either side thus far.

1 min: And they’re off! Manchester United attacking from left to right in their iconic red shirts with white shorts. San Jose in blue shirts and black shorts. United keeping possession early, booting the ball around the pitch with a string of 10 uninterrupted passes as the Earthquakes chase.

The players are emerging from the tunnel

Not much longer now in San Jose. Manchester United will be wearing black armbands tonight in memory of Professor Gail Stephenson, the team’s longtime vision scientist, who recently passed.

Ruby Tuesday indeed

Manchester United flew from Seattle to San Jose on, naturally, the Rolling Stones’ private jet.

Who’s better, who’s Best

Here’s a fun connection between these two sides: Man United legend George Best, late in his career, was loaned to the NASL’s San Jose Earthquakes – the spiritual if not according-to-Hoyle predecessors to today’s MLS side.

In 1981, he scored what’s often cited as the greatest goal in NASL history.

George Best’s 1981 goal for San Jose was one for the ages.

San Jose’s starting XI: Bingham; Wynne, Bernardez, Goodson, Stewart; Alashe, Pierazzi, Garcia, Cato; Salinas, Amarikwa.

Good evening and welcome to tonight’s friendly between Manchester United and the San Jose Earthquakes.

The 20-time English champions, in California for the second leg of their pre-season tour, will start the same team they dialed up for last week’s 1-0 win over Club America: Johnstone; Darmian, Jones, Blind, Shaw; Mata, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Young; Depay, Rooney. Of course, Louis van Gaal swapped out that entire team at half-time: look for more of the same tonight.

No word just yet on the Earthquakes’ team for tonight’s match, but will relay the info as soon as we get it.

Bryan will be here shortly.
