Manchester United will have to smash Newcastle's transfer record to sign Sean Longstaff

Manchester United could have to break a Newcastle United transfer record if they are net the services of Sean Longstaff.

United's record sale still stands at £35million after Andy Carroll's move to Liverpool back in 2011.

But the Magpies are getting ready to hold out for even more after talk of a £25million switch was played down by Toon officials.

Headlines from national newspapers have suggested a fee as high as £50million for academy product Longstaff, but Newcastle are still to receive an official bid from the Red Devils.

For now, Longstaff is finishing off his rehab after a knee injury picked up in March, and he will due to fly out to China with Newcastle at the end of next week.

Longstaff signed a contract until 2022 last year and there was hope that his deal would be improved after a superb start to his career after praise from top pundits like Gary Lineker and Jamie Redknapp last season.

However, those talks have been parked after Rafa Benitez's departure and the search for a new manager.
