Manchester United weigh up Dries Mertens transfer and more rumours

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Napoli star Dries Mertens in the upcoming transfer window.

Mertens is out of contract with the Serie A side at the end of the season and is yet to pen an extension.

The 32-year-old has scored 12 goals in 29 appearances this season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to strengthen United's forward line at the end of the season.

Gazzetta dello Sport report the Belgium international is wanted by the Reds who could face competition from Chelsea and Arsenal.

Mertens can play right across the forward line but doesn't fit the profile of player Solskjaer is looking to bring to Old Trafford.

While a free transfer could be appealing for United, his wage demands would be a stumbling block to any potential deal as Mertens is approaching the final years of his career.

MEN Sport understand United are firmly focused on landing their priority transfer targets Jadon Sancho, Jack Grealish and James Maddison.

Elsewhere, reports suggest United have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Aston Villa wonderkid Carney Chukwuemeka.

The 16-year-old is highly rated by the Midlands club and is also believed to be on the radar of Manchester City.

The Sun suggest the Reds are monitoring his situation with the Villains who have reportedly held contract talks with the youngster.

Finally, Mundo Deportivo report United remain in the race for Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey.

The 26-year-old impressed during the win against Liverpool in the Champions League and Atletico are hoping to tie him down to a new deal.

Partey has a £42million release clause in his current deal and reports in Spain suggest United, Arsenal, Roma and Inter Milan are interested.
