Manchester United 'want to sign' defender who 'had one foot' in Liverpool

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing a player who “had one foot in Liverpool”.

The January transfer window of 2021 saw the Reds leave it late to stock their ranks with new centre-backs. The injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip left Jurgen Klopp with little to no senior resources going into the second half of that campaign.

Liverpool moved to bring Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke and Ben Davies on a permanent deal from Preston North End. However, then-Braga manager Carlos Carvalhal has stated that David Carmo was close to moving to Anfield.

Reports in Manchester Evening News have claimed that Man United are considering a move for centre-back Carmo. Ajax defender Jurrien Timber is also an option, but Carmo was apparently on the verge of joining Liverpool a little over a year ago in a €4million loan move.

“David Carmo had one foot in Liverpool“, Carvalhal told Portuguese television channel RTP last year.

“On the day the market closed before 4pm, I was looking for alternatives because I was convinced that David Carmo would go to Liverpool.“

Injuries at the start of the season restricted Carmo to making just 19 appearances in 2021/22. He was made to wait until February for his first league outing for Braga, having missed the first few months of the campaign with an ankle injury.
