Manchester United vs Young Boys Champions League fixture could be played at neutral venue

Manchester United could see their Champions League match at home to Young Boys moved to a neutral venue, according to reports.

Having come under pressure before the November international break, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked midway through the month and has now been replaced by interim Ralf Rangnick until the end of this season.

Michael Carrick has taken caretaker charge between those two key decisions and it was under his guidance that United sealed Champions League progression with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal.

It means their final Group F outing — against Swiss opponents Young Boys — is no more than a formality, with United already assured of their place in the knockout stages.

But it might not necessarily take place beneath the famous Old Trafford lights.

Scheduled for Wednesday, December 8 with an 8pm kick-off, the game's location has come under question due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19.

The emergence of a new Omicron strain of the virus has thrown up concerns.

According to The Telegraph, governing body UEFA are attempting to discover whether the Young Boys squad will have to quarantine back in Switzerland for 10 days upon their return from Manchester.

The same article reports that if the elite sport exemption rule does not apply, then the game would be switched to a venue in a neutral country, or postponed if such a contingency can't be found.

Switzerland uncovered its first 'probable' Omicron case on Monday.

Switzerland has already effectively banned all Britons with immediate effect amid concerns over rising cases of the Omicron variant, with those entering the country required to quarantine for 10 days if they travel there.
