Manchester United vs Wolves: Will there be extra time and penalties in FA Cup third-round replay?

Manchester United are back in action this evening, as they host Wolves in an FA Cup third-round replay following a goalless draw at Molineux two weeks ago.

A place in the fourth round of the competition is at stake, where either Tranmere Rovers or Watford await, and United have the opportunity to get revenge after their defeat in the quarter-finals last season.

The replay between Tranmere and Wolves was postponed yesterday and has been rescheduled for next Thursday, with United's potential fourth-round tie taking place the following Sunday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hopeful that the tie is over within 90 minutes as the fixture schedule is already packed - but what will happen if the tie finishes level this evening? Here's everything you need to know.

Do replays have extra-time and penalties?

Replays will have extra-time and penalties at the end of 90 minutes in the third round, with the same situation in place for the fourth round if required.

30 minutes of extra-time will be played if the scoreline is level after the final whistle and the match will progress to penalties if there is still no winner decided.

However, no replays will take place from the fifth round of the competition and those matches will instead immediately advance to extra time and penalties.

The FA has reduced replays in the latter stages in order to ease fixture congestion, which was initially planned for the 2019/20 campaign but was introduced last season due to the progression of English clubs into the knockout stages of European competitions.

Are there away goals?

Away goals are not applicable for the FA Cup as the matches are single ties, rather than the two-legged affairs witnessed in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and the knockout stages of European competition.

As such, United will not be knocked out with a score draw this evening and the match will instead progress to extra-time, then onto penalties if required.
