Manchester United vs Sunderland LIVE
Mason Mount’s magnificent effort and a first Old Trafford goal for Benjamin Sesko secured a 2-0 victory for Manchester United against Sunderland to help ease the pressure on Ruben Amorim.
The under-fire Portuguese head coach headed into his 50th match at the Red Devils’ helm in the spotlight following last weekend’s bruising 3-1 loss at Brentford, but Amorim’s side responded well in wet and windy conditions against promoted Sunderland, with first-half goals from Mount and Sesko sealing a much-needed victory before the international break.
Recently signed United goalkeeper Senne Lammens impressed on his debut while Sunderland saw a penalty overturned before the break and were otherwise unable to avoid falling to just their second Premier League loss of the campaign.

FULL-TIME Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
17:01 , Alex DakersAnd that is that at Old Trafford!
A largely uneventful second half ends as it began, with Manchester United earning a vital win to ease the pressure on Ruben Amorim.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:54 , Alex Dakers90mins: Five minutes of stoppage time are announced as Eliezer Mayenda lays off to Chemsdine Talbi, but the Sunderland substitute shoots straight at Senne Lammens.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:48 , Alex Dakers85mins: After Matheus Cunha heads wide from a corner, Ruben Amorim makes two more changes.
The yellow-carded Casemiro is replaced by Manuel Ugarte, and teenaged centre-back Leny Yoro makes way for Harry Maguire.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:45 , Alex Dakers81mins: Comfortably into the final ten minutes of regulation time here at Old Trafford.
Sunderland started this second half slowly but have grown into it a little. Can they pull one back and make it a tense finish, or will Ruben Amorim’s side instead see out a much-needed win?
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:44 , Alex Dakers80mins: A first yellow card of the afternoon for Manchester United is shown to Casemiro for a needless slide into Brian Brobbey.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:43 , Alex Dakers79mins: On the edge of the box, Eliezer Mayenda has another chance now for Sunderland - but can’t keep his effort down.
Trai Hume then goes off, with Regis Le Bris chucking Lutsharel Geertruida on.
A final roll of the dice for the Black Cats.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:39 , Alex Dakers75mins: Here comes Kobbie Mainoo now. Bryan Mbeumo is the man going off.
In the meantime, Granit Xhaka is booked for hauling down Matheus Cunha.
Sunderland struggling to find a foothold in this game, with Nordi Mukiele’s delivery not quite met by Brian Brobbey a few moments ago.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:35 , Alex Dakers69mins: Another venture down the right wing by Amad Diallo, who picks out Casemiro in space near the edge of Sunderland’s box...
But the Brazilian can’t keep his shot down. Visible frustration on the face of the veteran midfielder afterwards, knowing that probably would have killed this game off.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:30 , Alex Dakers67mins: Sunderland try another long throw from Nordi Mukiele, but Chemsdine Talbi’s blocked shot sparks a Manchester United counter attack.
They can’t bypass the Black Cats’ defence this time, though.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:28 , Alex Dakers65mins: Time for Manchester United’s first changes, now.
Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu are sent on, with Diogo Dalot and Mason Mount - scorer of today’s opening goal - withdrawn.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:27 , Alex Dakers64mins: No luck for Sunderland with that corner as Bruno Fernandes heads clear and Trai Hume mishits a volley.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:26 , Alex Dakers62mins: Mayenda wins a corner as he forces Luke Shaw to put the ball out of play.
They’ll be aiming for Dan Ballard again, surely.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:23 , Alex Dakers59mins: That’s Traore’s last action of the afternoon as Regis Le Bris rings the changes.
Three more tweaks in total by the Sunderland boss, as Eliezer Mayenda replaces Traore, Brian Brobbey replaces Wilson Isidor, and Chemsdine Talbi comes on for Arthur Masuaku.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:21 , Alex Dakers57mins: Bruno Fernandes chips a free-kick over Sunderland’s wall but Leny Yoro can’t get good contact on it.
Straight up the other end, a long ball - swirling in the wind - tricks the back-tracking Fernandes.
Senne Lammens rushes out of his box to clear it and looks to have sandwiched Sunderland’s Bertrand Traore between himself and Fernandes a little.
Stuart Attwell is having none of it, and books Traore for simulation.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:19 , Alex Dakers55mins: Benjamin Sesko drops deep to pull Sunderland’s backline out of position, and the Manchester United striker picks out Bryan Mbeumo.
The former Brentford star shoots wide, though.
Sesko then lays it off for Mbeumo again on the very next United attack, but the Cameroonian is tackled by Dan Ballard.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:15 , Alex Dakers52mins: It’s been pretty quiet so far in this second half.
Sunderland left back Arthur Masuaka attempts a ball into the box which can’t quite find Wilson Isidor, who has been afforded very little service today.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:11 , Alex Dakers47mins: No changes for either side at half-time, by the way.
Dan Ballard on for Simon Adingra was the only alteration in the first half as Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris looked to re-enforce a backline getting repeatedly pummelled by Manchester United’s forays forward.
Back underway! Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
16:08 , Alex Dakers46mins: The action resumes at Old Trafford.
Can Sunderland grab an early goal to make things interesting?
Will we see Matheus Cunha soon if Ruben Amorim wants to push for a big win, or will the Manchester United boss look to protect his two-goal cushion?
All still to play for in rainy Manchester. Here we go again!
United's slick passing
15:59 , Alex DakersA quick half-time stat for you all:
Mason Mount's opener came after an 18-pass move by Manchester United; that’s the joint-most for a Premier League goal this season, and United's most in a league match since September 2023!
HALF-TIME! Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
15:53 , Alex DakersDan Ballard rises at the back post to meet Granit Xhaka’s delivery from said corner, but the substitute can’t get his header on target.
It means we go into the interval with Manchester United two goals up.
Back shortly!
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
15:52 , Alex Dakers45+3mins: No penalty given!
No contact between Sesko’s boot and Hume’s head. Corner kick for Sunderland instead.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
15:51 , Alex Dakers45+3mins: Trai Hume is claiming a penalty for contact from Benjamin Sesko’s raised boot.
It doesn’t look like there’s contact made, with it the ball that hits the Sunderland man’s face instead.
VAR has been checking, and the referee Stuart Attwell - who initially seemed to point to the penalty spot - is called over to take a look...
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
15:47 , Alex Dakers45mins: Three minutes of added time in the pouring rain at Old Trafford.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
15:46 , Alex Dakers44mins: Senne Lammens has something to do, finally!
A great save by Manchester United’s debutant to push wide a strong 20-yard drive from the boot of Granit Xhaka.
Sunderland win a corner, but can do nothing with it. They then try another long throw-in, but it’s eventually claimed by Lammens - to a big round of applause from the Old Trafford faithful.

Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
15:44 , Alex Dakers42mins: Bruno Fernandes does well to turn past Noah Sadiki, who hauls him down again.
The Sunderland man has to be careful here; he’s already on a yellow card and we aren’t at half-time yet.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
15:41 , Alex Dakers39mins: That’ll be a back five now for Sunderland, who have struggled to deal with Manchester United’s attacking onslaughts so far.
Dan Ballard - who scored on the opening weekend of this season before suffering an injury in his next match - slots in between Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele.
Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
15:39 , Alex Dakers37mins: Sunderland’s Noah Sadiki is booked after catching Bruno Fernandes, and the Black Cats are now making an early substitution here.
Left winger Simon Adingra, who just returned to the starting XI today, is hooked with a defender, Dan Ballard, sent on in his place.
GOAL! Man Utd 2-0 Sunderland
15:32 , Alex Dakers31mins: Benjamin Sesko doubles United’s lead!
Sunderland fail to deal with Diogo Dalot's long throw into the box and the ball reaches, Benjamin Sesko who timed his run well there and pokes home from six yards out.
That had been coming, and the way back into this match gets more difficult for the visitors.
A proper striker’s tap-in, that’s a first Old Trafford goal in the Premier League for Sesko, too, after Mount achieved the same feat some 20 minutes ago.

Man Utd 1-0 Sunderland
15:31 , Alex Dakers29mins: Five attempts from Manchester United to Sunderland’s zero so far.
Black Cats centre-back Omar Alderete wraps his arm around Bryan Mbeumo’s torso to prevent the United attacker getting away from him, and earns himself a yellow card as a result.
Man Utd 1-0 Sunderland
15:28 , Alex Dakers27mins: United have a corner, which Bryan Mbeumo delivers...
But it can’t quite clear the first man.
Man Utd 1-0 Sunderland
15:27 , Alex Dakers26mins: What a chance, and what a save!
Bruno Fernandes is the latest Manchester United player to have a crack from distance, and Robin Roefs pokes it onto the post.
A brilliantly-taken shot from just outside the penalty box by the United captain, who is shocked that hasn’t found the top corner, but perhaps an even better save from Roefs.
The Sunderland shot-stopper has become increasingly busy as we approach the half-hour mark.
Man Utd 1-0 Sunderland
15:25 , Alex Dakers22mins: Another attack comes from United’s right flank, with Amad this time releasing the ball to Bryan Mbeumo.
Roefs saves again.
The Red Devils are looking good for their advantage so far, with Sunderland offering relatively little aside from that early chance before they went behind. Senne Lammens is yet to really be tested.
Man Utd 1-0 Sunderland
15:23 , Alex Dakers21mins: United work the ball out to Amad Diallo, who cuts into Sunderland’s box and unleashes with his left foot.
Robin Roefs parries the ball back out and the Black Cats remain just one goal down, but that was some good play from the hosts.
Amad has been a threat in these early stages, and Sunderland - who took him on loan a few seasons ago - will need to contain him to prevent this getting ugly.
Man Utd 1-0 Sunderland
15:19 , Alex Dakers17mins: Bryan Mbeumo tries to gather Benjamin Sesko’s flick-on, but there are too many defenders around and it’s cleared.
Granit Xhaka was examined after a knee made contact with his head during that scuffle for the ball, but the Sunderland captain is fine to continue.
Man Utd 1-0 Sunderland
15:16 , Alex Dakers14mins: Diogo Dalot clumsily takes down Sunderland’s Enzo Le Fee, but the resulting free-kick comes to nothing.
The Black Cats attempt a long throw-in, but it’s cleared from United’s box.
GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Sunderland
15:09 , Alex Dakers8mins: Mason Mount opens the scoring!
Starting today ahead of Matheus Cunha, the former Chelsea man does well to bring down a Bryan Mbeumo cross on the edge of the box before side-footing the ball past Robin Roefs.
A great first touch and a well-taken finish from the Englishman, for his first Premier League goal for the Red Devils at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim will feel vindicated in his team selection, despite his surprisingly muted reaction on the side-lines. He’ll know there’s still a long way to go, of course.

Man Utd 0-0 Sunderland
15:08 , Alex Dakers6mins: Amad Diallo ventures forward towards the Sunderland penalty area and pokes the ball toward Bryan Mbeumo, who turns but can’t get a shot away under pressure from Arthur Masuaku.
Man Utd 0-0 Sunderland
15:06 , Alex Dakers4mins: An early chance for Sunderland as Granit Xhaka slips a ball out wide to Simon Adingra.
The ex-Brighton winger plays a low ball into the box but Bertrand Traore can’t convert.
It looked like Adingra was onside, despite the flag being raised.
KICK-OFF!
15:01 , Alex DakersWe are underway at Old Trafford following that minute’s silence.
Sunderland are the best performing newly-promoted team at this stage of the season in 13 years, I’ve just heard. 11 points from their first six games back in the top flight (although they have won just one of their last 31 matches at this ground).
A big test for Manchester United.
Under five minutes to go!
14:56 , Alex DakersLess than five minutes until our scheduled kick-off time at Old Trafford!
Remember, there will be a minute’s silence for the victims of Thursday’s terror attack in Manchester. The players will also be wearing black armbands.
Captain Xhaka ready for action
14:52 , Alex DakersSunderland skipper Granit Xhaka has three assists in his last four Premier League appearances.
His set piece deliveries - one of which led to his team’s winner last weekend - could cause Manchester United problems today.

Coming up... the debut of Lammens's dreams, or nightmares?
14:49 , Alex DakersWith how Manchester United are playing at the moment, it’s tricky to predict if we’ll see a high-scoring or cagey affair.
Goalkeeping debutant Senne Lammens will certainly be hoping for more defensive solidity from the Red Devils’ backline than they’ve exhibited throughout the season so far as he aims to keep a first clean sheet in front of his new home fans.

Le Bris on Sunderland's squad depth
14:42 , Alex DakersAnd some lines from Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris, now:
“It’s a good start to the season. New experience today, new challenge. We know playing at Old Trafford, it’s a strong place, but we will play hopefully our best football.
The Black Cats boss added: “I think we have depth in our squad right now, we can manage different options with the starters and finishers a bit later during the game so I think this starting line-up will be strong and we’ll have other options on the bench.”
And discussing United making several changes following their loss last weekend, he continued: “They needed to react. and we expect a strong opponent.”
🗣️ 'In our squad we have depth and different options.'

Amorim explains his starting XI
14:31 , Alex DakersHere’s what Ruben Amorim has to say on his starting XI:
“It’s rotation. Everybody has to be ready to play, we need to win this game.
“Every opponent is different so we try to find the best characteristics to win every match.”
Has Mason Mount perhaps been preferred for his defensive work rate compared to Matheus Cunha, to help United deal with Sunderland’s threat early on?

Cunha dangerous off the bench?
14:25 , Alex DakersMatheus Cunha’s benching is probably the most eye-catching piece of today’s team news, given a debut for Senne Lammens and some other defensive tweaks were largely expected.
The Brazilian, signed from Wolves this summer, failed to truly trouble Brentford last weekend but was hardly Manchester United’s worst performer on that day.

Ruben Amorim has to change something if he wants to keep his job, though, and perhaps the United boss views Cunha as a dangerous prospect to introduce off the bench in the second half.
Cunha’s omission means it’s Mason Mount partnering Bryan Mbeumo as the Red Devils’ dual No10 options, with Bruno Fernandes again deployed deeper beside Casemiro in Amorim’s unwavering 3-4-2-1 formation.
Benjamin Sesko keeps his place up front after scoring his first goal for his new club last Saturday.

Adingra and Traore on the wings as Sunderland make two changes
14:20 , Alex DakersFor Sunderland, meanwhile there are only two changes to the side that won 1-0 at Nottingham Forest last weekend.
Regis Le Bris reintroduces Bertrand Traore and Simon Adingra on the wings as Chris Rigg and Chemsdine Talbi start on the bench.

Four changes for United as Lammens starts, Cunha benched
14:08 , Alex DakersSenne Lammens makes his Manchester United debut today as the Red Devils host Sunderland.
The £18m Belgian goalkeeper signed for United late in the summer transfer window and has finally been handed his chance to impress in place of Altay Bayindir, who has been thoroughly unconvincing thus far in the campaign.

Amad Diallo also immediately returns to the starting XI after missing last weekend’s defeat to Brentford due to a family bereavement; he is one of four changes to Ruben Amorim’s starting line-up.
The others include Leny Yoro in place of Harry Maguire, Casemiro - back from suspension - in for Manuel Ugarte, and Mason Mount instead of Matheus Cunha.
Diogo Dalot also switches over to the left wing-back slot, meaning Patrick Dorgu drops out.

Can the Black Cats turn United's dreams to nightmares?
13:44 , Alex DakersToday marks Sunderland’s first visit to Old Trafford since December 2016.
The Black Cats lost 3-1 to United that day, but are currently enjoying much better form than their hosts.
Could they make it a nightmare afternoon at the Theatre of Dreams for the Red Devils?

Fabio Borini, Sunderland’s sole goal-scorer that day nearly nine years ago, will be in the away end at Old Trafford today. I think it rather unlikely that any of Daley Blind, Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Henrikh Mkhitaryan - United’s three scorers - will be there, though!

Xhaka a key man for Sunderland
13:36 , Alex DakersGranit Xhaka has been a stand-out performer in a Sunderland side that have exceeded the expectations of many so far this season.
The Swiss international and ex-Arsenal midfielder joined the Black Cats from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, and was promptly named club captain by manager Regis Le Bris.
Last weekend, he assisted Omar Alderete’s winning goal against Nottingham Forest via a lovely floated free-kick.
That was Xhaka’s third assist in four matches, and he has also been heavily involved on the defensive side of things.
Indeed, only five Premier League midfielders have produced more touches than the 33-year-old in 2025-26.

Le Bris had this to say about his skipper last weekend: “We need a captain like Granit because he gives us so much.
“He can control the rhythm, and he understands the game like a future coach – the game model and how to manage it in real time.”
In 11 league appearances against United, Xhaka has won five times and drawn thrice while registering three goals and two assists. Could he be a difference maker today?
Ruben Amorim could be sacked if Manchester United are beaten by Sunderland today, it has been reported.

According to Telegraph Sport, Amorim is under “acute pressure” with Saturday’s match viewed as a “must-win” occasion.
Come away from Old Trafford pointless, and there could be a new manager in the dugout against Liverpool after the international break, with the patience of co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers said to be “severely tested”.
Amorim admitted himself on Friday that he could be sacked if results don’t improve quickly, saying “nobody here is naive”.
But the Portuguese insisted that he just needs “one more game, because football is like that.
“We need one more game – we win, we get some hope and then in the next game we will see.”
It would reportedly cost United about £12million in compensation to sack Amorim within his first 12 months, but that may not factor too strongly into the Old Trafford hierarchy’s decision making given the desperation to make it back into European competitions.
Amorim is yet to win back-to-back Premier League games and has earned only 34 points from his 33 league games since replacing Erik ten Hag last November.
United to hold minute's silence for terror attack victims
13:15 , Alex DakersManchester United will hold a minute's silence before today's game at Old Trafford in tribute to the victims of Thursday's terror attack in the city.
It has been reported that the players will also wear black armbands as a mark of respect to the two men who died in the attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall.
Three people remain in hospital with serious injuries after the attack.
United head coach Ruben Amorim said: "It's a crazy world that we are living in the moment, a lot of these things are happening.
"Of course, our sympathy is for the victims and we will pay tribute tomorrow. But it is a crazy world in this moment."
The same tributes are expected be paid at Manchester City's match at Brentford on Sunday and at City's Women's Super League match at home to Arsenal on Saturday.
Amorim issues response to ex-players' criticism of system
13:03 , Alex DakersRuben Amorim has said that Manchester United are still carrying “baggage” from last season as he issued a response to criticism from former players.
The likes of Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, and Wayne Rooney have all criticised the Portuguese during his tenure at Old Trafford.
Rooney remarked that he had “no faith” in the ex-Sporting Lisbon manager, while Scholes said that Amorim “cannot keep playing” with his 3-4-2-1 system.
United sit 14th in the Premier League, having won just two of the opening six games.
Amorim acknowledged that previous results were not good enough, but again shrugged off scepticism over his system.

Last time out... Sunderland in European places
12:55 , Alex DakersAs for Sunderland, Regis Le Bris’ side harnessed their promotion momentum to briefly move up to fifth in the Premier League table last weekend (they later dropped to sixth following Crystal Palace’s win over Liverpool).
The Black Cats invested heavily over the summer, bringing in known quantities off the continent, with the likes of Lutsharel Geetruida and Nordi Mukiele in defence, and Brian Brobbey from Ajax to add to Wilson Isidor and Elizer Mayenda up front.
Omar Alderete, another new signing, popped up with the winner to stun Ange Postecoglou’s Nottingham Forest at the City Ground last time out, and Sunderland are unbeaten since their 2-0 loss to fellow promoted side Burnley back in August.
They’ve won three and drawn two of their six league outings so far.

Last time out... United's third Premier League loss
12:50 , Alex DakersRuben Amorim’s side were dealt another heavy blow when they visited Brentford last time out, losing 3-1 to Keith Andrews’ Bees at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for the Red Devils, with including their captain missing a penalty - his second unsuccessful attempt from the spot this season - to cap off an awful afternoon in west London.
Their third league defeat of the campaign, it means United come into today’s match with more losses than wins so far.
The one positive from the day was that new striker Benjamin Sesko finally got off the mark for his new club, notching a consolation.

Man Utd vs Sunderland prediction
12:45 , Alex DakersThis would usually be a game that most United fans would look at and expect to win, but Sunderland have proven to be a surprise package in the early exchanges of the campaign.
Defensively sound, the Black Cats have shown that they can score goals too, with Elizer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor both opening their top-flight accounts already this term.
Combine that with the creativity of Enzo Le Fee, Chris Rigg, and Chemsdine Talbi, and that very quickly poses problems for United’s leaky defence.
That said, Amorim has his first-choice attacking trio available to him, with new arrivals Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha likely to slot in behind Benjamin Sesko, while captain Bruno Fernandes will be keen to make amends for his miss from 12 yards last weekend.
Draw, 1-1.
Sunderland early team news
12:40 , Alex DakersFor Sunderland, there are a number of absentees, and most of them come in the defensive third of the field.
Dennis Cirkin is nursing a wrist injury, Leo Hjelde is struggling with an Achilles problem, while Reinildo is suspended after his red card against Aston Villa.
Aji Alese, however, could be close to a return in this game from a shoulder injury. Romaine Mundle and Habib Diarra are both out until the international break at least with a thigh and groin injury respectively.
Man Utd early team news: Casemiro and Amad available
12:38 , Alex DakersThere are two injury concerns for United, and they both come at the back.
Noussair Mazraoui is the big one, with his thigh injury ruling him out until the international break, while his former Ajax team-mate Lisandro Martinez is still completing his recovery from an ACL problem.
As for returners, Casemiro missed the Brentford debacle after his red card during the win over Chelsea, and he could return to action here.
Amad Diallo, a former Sunderland loanee, could also return to the fold against his old club after he was given compassionate leave for a family grievance.
Will we see United’s new-look front three start together again, as they did in the loss to Brentford last weekend?
