Manchester United vs Man City referee confirmed for Manchester derby

Andre Marriner has been confirmed as the referee who will take charge of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Manchester United host Man City in a game that will have major ramifications for both the Premier League title race and the battle to finish in the top four.

City are currently two points behind league leaders Liverpool with a game in hand and can go top with a win, while United are three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea having also played a game fewer.

Marriner, 48 from Birmingham, has been a Premier League official since 2005 and was listed in FIFA's Category 1 for referees between 2009 and 2017.

He last took charge of a game involving a Manchester club when City beat Swansea 3-2 in the FA Cup last month, with Pep Guardiola's side the beneficiaries of a fortunate penalty decision at the Liberty Stadium that day.

Marriner's last United game was back in January, when the Reds beat Newcastle 2-0 at St James' Park. He's shown 76 yellow cards and three reds this season.

The last time Marriner refereed a Manchester derby was back in the 2011/12 season, when City beat United 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium courtesy of a Vincent Kompany header.
