Manchester City put one foot in the Carabao Cup final by defeating their bitter rivals United 3-1 in the first leg of their semi-final.
It did not take Pep Guardiola’s side long to break the deadlock. They enjoyed the better of the opening stages and took the lead when the outstanding Bernardo Silva beat David de Gea with a sublime long-range strike.
The Portugal international then assisted Riyad Mahrez with the Algerian doubling City’s lead, before the hapless Andreas Pereira turned the ball into his own net shortly before half-time.
However, United improved in the second-half and at least pulled one goal back when captain Marcus Rashford raced clear of the City defence and finished confidently past Claudio Bravo.
