The midfielder was not part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad for the Premier League match against rivals Liverpool after picking up an injury in training.

Having improved since Solskjaer joined the club in December, Matic will now miss games against Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Southampton PSG and Arsenal.

United must overturn a 2-0 deficit in Paris on Wednesday 6 March after the French champions won at Old Trafford, Solskjaer's first defeat during his tennure.

Solskjaer confirmed the injury on MUTV.  He confirmed that Matic will be "out for a couple of weeks" after sustaining an injury in training.

"We tried to get him fit for the game but it wasn't to be," the United manager added. "But we'll manage without (him)"

There was also no place in the Liverpool team for Antony Martial, although Jesse Lingard was fit to start on the bench.

Solskjaer handed Scott McTominay his first league start under his management and said he is the right replacement for Matic.

“Scott has played these games before. He's an academy kid who knows the importance of these games. He's got some of the same attributes that Nemanja has so I'm sure he'll slot in there and do well."

Manchester United XI: De Gea; Young, Lindelof, Smalling, Shaw; McTominay, Pogba, Herrera; Mata, Rashford, Lukaku

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Milner, van Dijk, Matip, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Firmino, Mané, Salah.
