Manchester United vs Liverpool FC referee confirmed

Martin Atkinson has been appointed as the referee for this Sunday's clash between Manchester United and Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's team could arrive at Old Trafford with an eight point lead at the top of the Premier League table, although the Reds have only won two of their last 18 visits to United, losing 13 games against their old rivals in that time.

United can also point to the fact they've only lost twice in the last 13 games in which Atkinson has been in charge.

The Dewsbury-born official has taken charge of one United game this season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side claiming a 1-0 win over Leicester at Old Trafford thanks to Marcus Rashford's first half penalty.

However, Atkinson also took charge of United's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool last season, with the game proving to be the last under Jose Mourinho.

Atkinson appears to be a lucky charm for the Anfield club, with the Reds unbeaten in the last 13 games in which the 48-year-old has officiated.

With Liverpool's last Premier League defeat in a game which Atkinson has officiated was in March 2015, which, rather ironically, was against United at Anfield.
