Manchester United vs Hong Kong LIVE!

Manchester United put the growing transfer rumours surrounding Bruno Fernandes to one side as they finished their short post-season tour of Southeast Asia with a win on Friday. The Red Devils were in Hong Kong for the first time since 2013, desperately seeking to end a difficult trip on a positive note after being stunned 1-0 by the ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday to continue what has been a truly wretched campaign.

Ruben Amorim was stinging with his latest criticism of his squad after that shock result that saw them booed off the pitch, but his side fought back from going behind to win 3-1 in Hong Kong despite the latest speculation over Fernandes. The United captain started this afternoon along with Alejandro Garnacho, but is now believed to be seriously considering a lucrative offer to join Saudi side Al-Hilal in a move that would see the club net around £100million.

United dominated in Hong Kong on Friday with chances galore from the outset, but needed Chido Obi to score twice off the bench in the second half after Tom Heaton could not stop Juninho’s earlier effort. Ayden Heaven then set the seal on a much-needed win in the final seconds of stoppage time.

A long, arduous and mostly miserable season for the Red Devils ends in a deserved friendly comeback victory, thanks to Chido Obi.

A very satisfying second half indeed for Ruben Amorim and Co.

Hong Kong 1-2 Manchester United

90 mins: Manchester United have four minutes of additional time to negotiate here.

But this victory doesn’t look in any doubt now.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:40 , George Flood

80 mins: Moorhouse earns United a corner that is emphatically headed clear.

But here come United again through Mainoo and Amad down the right...

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:39

79 mins: I’ve lost count of the number of times that United have won the ball back high up the pitch in this second half, Ugarte and now Mount leading the charge.

But 1-1 it remains as we head into the final 10 minutes in Hong Kong.

A really frenetic pace about the game now as the ball flies quickly from end to end.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:36 , George Flood

76 mins: Another chance for Mainoo after a great take but the goalkeeper is there quickly to snuff out the danger.

Mount is now tripped inside the box but the referee says no penalty.

That looked stonewall. Not for the first time today a convincing United shout for a spot-kick is turned down.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:33

75 mins: What a chance for 2-1 to United, but Mainoo loses all composure inside the box and fires high over the crossbar.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:33 , George Flood

73 mins: Two final changes now from Amorim with just over 15 minutes to go.

Jim Thwaites and Jack Moorhouse replace Armer and Collyer.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:29 , George Flood

69 mins: Obi again twists and turns to find a sliver of space inside the Hong Kong box for a low strike that lacks power and is easily saved.

He’s so good at that.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:28

67 mins: Another dangerous Mount delivery - this time from a free-kick - is held before Obi is just wrestled off the ball inside the box.

Hong Kong break very well indeed down the right flank and there are two key blocks inside the United box before Bayindir saves down low.

A huge let-off there. That should have been 2-1.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:26 , George Flood

65 mins: United are still looking nice and sharp for the most part in this second half, winning the ball high up the pitch plenty.

Heaven flicks on Mount’s excellent corner delivery into the box from the left but Daniel Armer can’t finish at the back post.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:22 , George Flood

60 mins: A very rare attack from Hong Kong as we tick past the hour mark.

They manage a corner, but it’s dealt with quite comfortably by United.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:20 , George Flood

58 mins: That should be his second goal inside a quarter of an hour for Obi, but he can only guide his close-range header wide of the front post.

United are relentless now and quickly force another corner as Hong Kong make another series of changes, including taking off key man Everton Camargo.

Stefan Pereira is among the players coming on.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:16 , George Flood

55 mins: Another hopeful effort blocked from Obi.

Looks like the prolific former Arsenal youngster is going to get so many chances in this second half.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:15 , George Flood

54 mins: United are really looking confident now, Amad setting up Mount for a first-time curling strike that is parried away.

Obi then heads the follow-up wide.

Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United

14:12 , George Flood

52 mins: Dorgu has been absolutely central to this second-half comeback from United so far.

There are shouts of handball as they work another corner, with teenage defender Reece Munro then heading off target.

GOAL! Hong Kong 1-1 Manchester United | Chido Obi 49'

14:09 , George Flood

49 mins: That didn’t take long from United’s new XI.

The referee plays a decent advantage and Obi slams into the bottom corner.

Game on!

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

14:08 , George Flood

48 mins: Much more purpose about United already in this second half, and they probably should have had a penalty for a challenge on the lively Dorgu.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

14:05

Back underway for the final 45 minutes in this truly treacherous season for Manchester United.

It is indeed a fully-changed team from Ruben Amorim in the second half.

Here it is:

Bayindir, Munro, Heaven, Armer, Amad, Collyer, Ugarte, Dorgu, Mount, Mainoo, Obi

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

14:01

Sounds like Ruben Amorim is going to send out an entirely different Manchester United XI for the second half.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

Just the 71 per cent possession, 15 shots and seven on target for United in that one-sided first half.

One shot total from Hong Kong, one goal.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

Half-time

More misery so far for Manchester United on their post-season tour of Asia.

They have been the dominant team and created plenty of chances in the wet conditions, but haven’t been able to find the finish and trail again after Hong Kong scored with their only real attack of the game so far.

Heaton should have done much better with Juninho’s effort at his near post.

Another raft of substitutions will be coming at the break.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:48 , George Flood

47 mins: Garnacho’s corner from the left has been punched clear by Tse Ka Wing.

And now the signal has been lost...

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:47

45 mins: Two added minutes have been signalled at the end of this first half.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:46

43 mins: Hong Kong are cheaply caught out by a combination of Kone and Garnacho while trying to play out from the back.

Garnacho quickly finds Fernandes, who has an effort blocked before Garnacho then arrows wide himself.

Man down for Hong Kong at the moment.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:44 , George Flood

40 mins: Another huge chance for United to equalise but young defender Fredricson’s header from the edge of the six-yard box from a corner strangely lacks any power and bounces off the deck before being easily held by Tse Ka Wing.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:42 , George Flood

38 mins: It’s only a friendly of course and United want to provide some entertainment, but surely Amorim will be furious with that Fernandes rabona attempt from close range.

He should have just slotted in to restore parity, then worry about the flicks and tricks.

Garnacho is frustrated as he can’t bring in a pass down the left flank, then going past Yue Tze Nam again before the ball is flicked into the hands of goalkeeper Tse Ka Wing.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:38 , George Flood

35 mins: Fernandes just tried to finish with a rabona when sent clear one-on-one!

It’s saved, with Hojlund then twice unable to finish as Kamason’s powerful effort is cleared off the line.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:36 , George Flood

33 mins: Good build-up play again from United despite the woeful conditions, which are having more and more of an impact now on this pitch.

19-year-old Malian midfielder Kone ends up blasting well wide from the edge of the box.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:33 , George Flood

31 mins: The rain is still falling heavily as Fernandes lines up another free-kick delivery from wide on the left flank.

It’s flicked on well by a diving Hojlund, but the ball soars wide of the back post.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:31

29 mins: A long-range effort from Hojlund is blocked as United look to pick up the pace once more in search of a first-half equaliser.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:29

26 mins: Tyler Fletcher is replacing Shea Lacey after that drinks break as Amorim looks to his bench early again in Hong Kong.

Sekou Kone has also replaced Casemiro in midfield.

Fletcher is of course one of the twin sons of former United stalwart and current first-team coach Darren Fletcher, along with Jack.

They used to be in Manchester City’s academy but both moved to United a couple of years ago.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:28 , George Flood

25 mins: A first-half drinks break now with the temperature not too far off 30 degrees still in Hong Kong despite the rain and with humidity at around 76 per cent.

A chance for Amorim to read the riot act, perhaps.

Hong Kong 1-0 Manchester United

13:26

21 mins: United try to answer back quickly as Casemiro goes for the spectacular.

Amorim will be absolutely seething and mystified as to how his side are losing this, given their dominant start and the chances created.

The story of a long and wretched season.

GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 Hong Kong | Juninho 19'

13:21 , George Flood

19 mins: Disaster for United!

Hong Kong score with their first meaningful attack of the game, Brazilian-born forward Juninho exploiting the space to collect a through ball and firing in at the near post.

Dreadful from Heaton, who should have kept that out.

It’s been all United so far, but they trail once again.

Manchester United 0-0 Hong Kong

13:20 , George Flood

18 mins: Hong Kong’s best attack of the game so far as they move the ball quickly on the counter, but the offside flag is up against Merkies.

Manchester United 0-0 Hong Kong

13:18 , George Flood

15 mins: The early opportunities are piling up for United now.

After some nifty football inside the box, Garnacho shrugs off Leon Jones and his accurate cutback is then steered wide by Lacey.

He should have done much better with that.

Manchester United 0-0 Hong Kong

13:17 , George Flood

13 mins: Another smart low save needed from Tse Ka Wing after Garnacho cuts in from the left, riding a challenge from Everton Camargo before also beating Ngan Cheuk Pan inside the box.

Garnacho has been United’s best player so far on what could be his last appearance.

Manchester United 0-0 Hong Kong

13:15 , George Flood

11 mins: 18-year-old Shea Lacey has looked bright for United in the early going, felled by Raphael Merkies as a swerving Fernandes free-kick from range is then parried by the goalkeeper and scrambled behind.

Casemiro earns another corner in quick succession as Amorim’s side continue to ramp up the early pressure.

Manchester United 0-0 Hong Kong

13:12 , George Flood

8 mins: Hong Kong with a couple of forays forward but United defend solidly in response, particularly Kamason at right-back.

Amass is repeatedly bombing on down that left flank, linking up well with Garnacho as the visitors continue to ask questions of their hosts in the opening exchanges.

Manchester United 0-0 Hong Kong

13:08

5 mins: GOAA... NO!

Casemiro dives to head in Fernandes’ lofted free-kick, but the offside flag is raised.

That was very tight. Still 0-0, but it’s been an impressive start by United.

They look far more determined so far than in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

Manchester United 0-0 Hong Kong

13:06 , George Flood

4 mins: Hojlund wriggles free from two defenders inside the box to collect a wonderful lofted pass forward before his effort is parried by goalkeeper Tse Ka Wing.

Lively young winger Lacey is then brought down by Fernando Pereira to give United a free-kick in a dangerous position.

Manchester United 0-0 Hong Kong

13:05 , George Flood

2 mins: A fast start for United in the wet conditions.

They switch it quickly and then get it down and move it fast, a dangerous low ball going across the box with Amass and Garnacho both involved.

The ball is initially going quickly across the ground before then holding up.

We could have an issue here if this rain doesn’t ease up.

Manchester United vs Hong Kong

Underway amid the rain in Hong Kong, where it’s still almost 30 degrees at 8pm local time.

Can Manchester United finish a long and hugely frustrating season on a positive note?

Kick-off imminent

12:59 , George Flood

The teams are out at a drizzly Hong Kong Stadium, where pre-match pleasantries are being exchanged after a show.

Plenty of excitement surrounding Manchester United’s first visit since 2013.

Ashley Westwood has gone for a very unusual formation for Hong Kong, featuring a sweeper behind a back three and a diamond with two up top.

Let’s see how that works out...

No repeat of Lionel Messi backlash

12:53

It’s probably not a surprise that Ruben Amorim has elected to start the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho today despite their respective transfer situations, given the anger that occurred on Inter Miami’s visit to Hong Kong last year.

There were boos and demands for refunds from fans after Lionel Messi did not play in a pre-season fixture for the MLS side against a local XI in February 2024.

Messi had picked up an injury in a game in Japan just days before and ended up issuing an apology on social media website Weibo amid a strong backlash from Chinese supporters that lasted for weeks and became a big story.

Ashley Westwood: Hong Kong not out to hurt Man Utd

12:42

Hong Kong boss Ashley Westwood has admitted that Manchester United need today’s game “like a hole in the head” given their ongoing struggles.

The ex-Red Devils youth defender is evidently not looking to further stick the boot in on his former club, insisting the hosts will approach the game for what it is - an exhibition.

“I’m not going to be jumping up and down on the sidelines thinking if we pull off a result it will lead to this or that,” Westwood said on Thursday, per the South China Morning Post.

“I’m here to enhance what Manchester United are trying to do – they want to put on a show for the fans, and we are their sparring partners.

“We’re not there to scalp anyone, or go after people. We’ll play a nice, relaxed game and treat it for what it is: an exhibition.

“It’s a training session for us in our window; we’re not going to go smashing into tackles and being stupid.

“This is a unique game. We’ll give everybody an opportunity to showcase their talents against one of the best teams in the world – they might not get that opportunity again.

“The only impression I want us to give is that we are professional and organised, and play in the right way.”

Hong Kong lineup

12:23

Here is how Hong Kong line up against Manchester United today, including a start for influential Brazil-born winger Everton Camargo.

The team also includes Scottish-born former Dunfermline defender Leon Jones, but there is no Shinichi Chan, Matt Orr or Philip Chan Siu-kwan.

Hong Kong have another friendly against Nepal next week before an important Asian Cup qualifier at home to India on June 10.

Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho both start

12:10

So the headline team news for Manchester United in a grey and rainy Hong Kong is that Bruno Fernandes starts amid that latest speculation today that he is now seriously considering a lucrative transfer to Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal.

Also in from the start is Alejandro Garnacho, who could well be making his final appearance for the club after being told to find a move this summer.

Casemiro and Rasmus Hojlund both start again, joined by the experienced Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton, who gets the nod in goal ahead of Altay Bayindir with no Andre Onana.

More chances to impress for youngsters Jaydan Kamason, Tyler Fredricson, Godwill Kukonki, Harry Amass and Shea Lacey.

The bench is very youthful as expected, but does feature first-teamers like Bayindir, Patrick Dorgu, Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte, Amad Diallo, Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi.

Mason Mount is also among the substitutes.

Manchester United lineup

11:50 , George Flood

Manchester United XI: Heaton, Kamason, Evans, Fredricson, Kukonki, Amass, Casemiro, Fernandes, Garnacho, Lacey, Hojlund

Subs: Bayindir, Armer, Dorgu, Heaven, Munro, Kone, Collyer, T Fletcher, Mainoo, Moorhouse, Mount, Thwaites, Ugarte, Amad, Obi

Familiar face leading Hong Kong

11:43 , George Flood

Hong Kong are managed by Ashley Westwood, a former stalwart defender in the EFL (not to be confused for the former Burnley and Aston Villa midfielder) for clubs like Crewe, Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham who came through the academy at Manchester United and was part of their 1995 FA Youth Cup-winning team, though never made a professional appearance for the club.

He has managed in Malaysia, India and Afghanistan since retiring in 2012 and having a short-lived stint in charge at Kettering, appointed to his current role on a two-year deal last summer.

Westwood has turned things around since a 1-0 loss to Liechtenstein in his first game in charge, embarking on an impressive seven-match unbeaten streak and qualifying for the 2025 EAFF Championship.

That run ended with a goalless draw away against Singapore in Asian Cup qualification in March that followed a 2-0 home victory over Macau.

Amorim claims Man Utd stars 'choke in every game' after shock loss

11:25 , George Flood

Certainly not for the first time in his rather disastrous Manchester United tenure to date, a hugely frustrated Ruben Amorim did not hold back in his criticism of the squad after their shock friendly defeat by an ASEAN All-Star XI playing together for the first time in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

"Yes, a disappointing result, but no injuries and a tough pitch,” he said.

"We don’t have it in us not to choke in every exercise, in every game, that is what happened.

"We should win these kind of games, no matter what. We need to bring that inside of us in every game.

"The important thing is no injuries with this weather and to arrive here in this day. It is not an excuse, we should perform better."

Amorim admitted he continued to feel guilty about such poor results and even suggested that his side needed the boos received from fans in Malaysia after the full-time whistle.

"I feel always guilty," he said. "I said that in the last game.

"I am always guilty of the performance of the team no matter and since I am here in the first day, I am guilty.

"Then the boos from the fans, I think it's something that we need maybe because every game that we lost in the Premier League they were always there (cheering us).

"So, it's like the way of playing. If they see that it's not working, they will change the way they behave.

"But I felt then when we finished and we walk away, like every time, the supporters were with us. Let's wait for the next season."

No regrets for Amad Diallo over obscene gesture

11:09 , George Flood

Another unwanted Manchester United episode in the build-up to today’s closing post-season friendly in Hong Kong involved Amad Diallo.

The Ivorian winger was seen appearing to put his middle finger up at fans in an obscene gesture made outside the team hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

United said it was a reaction to serious personal abuse aimed at Amad’s mother.

“I have respect for people but not for the one who insults my mom,” he wrote on social media.

“I shouldn’t have reacted like that but I don’t regret what I did.

“We had a great time in Malaysia with good people.”

Bruno Fernandes 'seriously considering' Al-Hilal move

11:00 , George Flood

As ever for this iteration of Manchester United, the build-up to today’s game has been littered with unwanted headlines.

The most prominent and timely of which surrounds beloved skipper Bruno Fernandes, whom reports this morning claim is now “seriously considering” a lucrative summer transfer to Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal.

The Portuguese was said earlier this week to have been handed a 72-hour deadline for a decision on a final take-it-or-leave-it contract offer worth an eye-watering £700,000 a week tax-free and £200m total over three years, including bonuses.

Both Fernandes and Ruben Amorim previously insisted the captain was going nowhere, though it seems like the tide is now changing.

United are reported to be “relaxed” over the ongoing saga, though are likely to recognise that a transfer fee worth at least £80m could be hugely beneficial to their summer business, despite that it would mean losing their best player.

Let’s see how involved Fernandes is for United today and what the reception is from the fans in Hong Kong.

He was expected to start after only playing the second half in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

Manchester United vs Hong Kong prediction

10:51

It surely cannot get any worse for Manchester United, who showed little ability or desire to fight for the ball on Wednesday.

Eight of the starting lineup lost the Europa League final, so the supposed talent was on show.

Hong Kong will prove a sterner test than an ASEAN All-Star XI playing together for the first time in Kuala Lumpur, and you certainly wouldn't rule out them scoring a goal, or two.

Surely, though, United produce a better performance. Surely.

Manchester United to win, 4-2.

Manchester United team news

10:46 , George Flood

Manchester United named an initially strong team to face the ASEAN All-Stars in Malaysia on Wednesday, with Andre Onana, Harry Maguire, Patrick Dorgu, Ayden Heaven, Diogo Dalot, Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Hojlund all starting.

However, a number of youngsters got their chance with a handful starting and plenty more introduced in scheduled substitutions made as early as the half-hour mark and at half-time at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium, where more than 72,000 fans turned out.

There will be a more youthful feel to United from the outset in Hong Kong today, with Onana, Maguire - who captained the team in Kuala Lumpur with Bruno Fernandes only introduced at half-time - and Dalot all flying to India since then for fan engagement duties.

Luke Shaw has already been ruled out again, while Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee are also absent.

Also not involved are Leny Yoro, Noussair Mazraoui, Victor Lindelof or the departing Christian Eriksen.
