Manchester United vs Burnley: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains Anthony Martial's absence

Anthony Martial was left out of Manchester United’s starting line-up to play Burnley after picking up a slight injury, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said.

Martial scored his first goal in five matches against Arsenal in a 3-1 FA Cup fourth round victory on Friday yet has since suffered a minor issue in training.

The 23-year-old’s problem is not thought to be serious but he did not travel with the United squad for Tuesday’s Old Trafford clash.

“He got a slight injury in training but hopefully he’ll be back for next weekend,” Solskjaer, the United caretaker manager, told MUTV.

“There was no chance he could play today so it was easy enough to put Romelu [Lukaku] on the pitch.”

Martial previously missed United’s Boxing Day win against Huddersfield Town under Solskjaer with an illness.

The France international was also left out of the much-changed side which beat Reading 2-0 in the FA Cup third round.

Andreas Pereira was selected in midfield for United, making only his second Premier League start of the season and his first since the opening day.

“I think Andreas has been fantastic in training,” Solskjaer said. “He really has been determined.

“He was disappointed with his game against Reading and we had a little chat about it. He’s been working really hard and I think he deserves a chance.

“Ander [Herrera] has been different class but, this time, you knwo we need to rotate a little bit.”
