Some of the pressure facing Ruben Amorim was alleviated on Saturday afternoon as Man United scraped their first win of the season by way of Bruno Fernandes’ injury-time penalty. After a humiliating loss to Grimsby in midweek, only victory would do as United returned to Old Trafford, and they battled to a crucial three points over a plucky Burnley side.
United led at the break thanks to an unfortunate own goal. Casemiro’s headed effort ricocheted off the bar and deflected back over the line from Josh Cullen’s shoulder, and Martin Dubravka could not quite keep it out. Lyle Foster equalised shortly after half-time, but Bryan Mbeumo had the hosts back in front barely two minutes later.
They were again pegged back, though, as Jaidon Anthony bundled home after a six-yard-box melee. Burnley’s hearts were broken late on, though, as Amad Diallo threw himself to the ground in the box after feeling his shirt pulled. With 97 minutes played, Bruno Fernandes slotted a penalty home, just barely beyond the reach of Dubravka, to hand a somewhat relieved Amorim his first win of the season.
