Ole Gunnar Solskjaer allowed youngster Charlie Wellens to take part in training at Carrington on Wednesday in order to give him a taste of life in Manchester United’s first team.
The 16-year-old joined up with Solskjaer’s squad ahead of Thursday’s Europa League opener against Astana, in which several academy talents are expected to play.
Wellens - who is the son of former United youth player and Swindon manager Richie Wellens – is unlikely to be part of the match day squad against Astana.
But the young midfielder is highly-rated at United and Solskjaer hopes the experience of training with the senior squad will aid his development.
“It’s what we do at this club at certain points. We drop them in with the first team, give them a little taste for it,” the United manager said.
“I know his dad from when he played and Charlie’s a very good footballer. Today was a great day for him, training with them.
“I remember when I was in the first team, Febian Brandy was suddenly training with us at 15. It’s just one of these little ‘drips’ that we have to make young players.”
Though Wellens is unlikely to be involved against Astana, Solskjaer confirmed two other United academy products – Mason Greenwood and Axel Tuanzebe – will start at Old Trafford.
An injury to Daniel James opens the door for Tahith Chong to start on the wing, while midfielder James Garner may also be involved.
