Huddersfield Town relegated from Premier League

Jan Siewert’s side lose 2-0 at Selhurst Park and results elsewhere confirm the inevitable, with Southampton and Burnley both picking up wins. Huddersfield become the first Premier League team since Derby in 2007-2008 to be relegated in March. They have won just once in the league since December.

Two huge goals in the Championship: Leeds lead Millwall – and Sheffield United trail at home to Bristol City! Andreas Weimann has struck a hat-trick for City to rock Bramall Lane, while Pablo Hernández nudges Leeds in front at Elland Road.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 2-0 Huddersfield (van Aanholt, 85)

Patrick van Aanholt sweeps home, and Huddersfield need three goals in five minutes to avoid relegation.

GOAL! Burnley 2-0 Wolves (McNeil, 77)

Dwight McNeil is a mightily impressive young player. Sean Dyche will have every reason to celebrate on his 300th game in charge of the club. Neil Warnock just slumped even further into his armchair.

Some big goals at the top of the Championship: Leeds find an equaliser against Millwall, while Sheffield United are ahead once more against Bristol City. Scott Hogan has poked Chris Wilder’s side back in front. And Martyn Waghorn completes his hat-trick for Derby, who have romped into a 6-1 lead at home to Rotherham.

GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Watford (Martial, 72)

United double their lead against the run of play! It was hardly a beauty, but Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side move closer to getting the job done. It all stemmed from good work from Jesse Lingard, who found Martial, whose effort cannoned off Ben Foster. But Martial picks up the pieces to scoop into an empty net.

GOAL! Crystal Palace 1-0 Huddersfield (Milivojevic, 73 pen)

The Palace skipper hammers his penalty beyond Ben Hamer and, as it stands, Huddersfield will be relegated. A quick reminder of the permutations: if Jan Siewert’s side lose at Selhurst Park and both Burnley and Southampton pick up wins, then they are down.

Palace have been piling on the pressure – and now Roy Hodgson’s side have a penalty. Wilfried Zaha is upended in the box by Bacuna.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær makes a couple of changes. Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira are on in place of Mata and Herrera. United need to up the ante. They still have that slender one-goal lead but they are not exactly dominating, with Paul Pogba particularly sloppy.

In the Bundesliga, Dortmund have snatched victory with Paco Alcácer popping up twice in second-half stoppage-time. Alcácer is the first player in Bundesliga history to score five goals in the 90th minute in a single season. Those goals take them top of the table, ahead of Bayern Munich, who could only draw at Freiburg. Back on home soil and to the Championship, where Aston Villa have doubled their lead at home to Blackburn – Tyrone Mings, the Bournemouth loanee, nods in after staying up in the box.

Watford are camped in the Manchester United half. They are by no means out of the contest at Old Trafford. Will Hughes and Roberto Pererya have already forced De Gea into smart stops. If Solskjær is to earn victory in his first game as the full-time manager, they are going to have to do it the hard way. Javi Gracia has tweaked things, with Daryl Janmaat replaced by Kiko Femenía.

Leeds trail once more ... Millwall go back in front from the penalty spot! Ben Marshall sends Bailey Peacock-Farrell the wrong way from 12 yards. Work to do for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

GOAL! Brighton 0-1 Southampton (Hojbjerg, 53)

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the Southampton captain, scores what is a vital goal in the battle to avoid the drop. It was a slick break by Saints, with Nathan Redmond feeding the Dane to dink home. That goal is a blow for Cardiff, but a body blow for Huddersfield, who will be relegated if Palace strike at Selhurst Park. Elsewhere, Mason Mount has added a fourth for Derby at home to Rotherham.

Peeeeeeeeeeeep!

We’re back under way around the grounds. A quick glance at the goings on in Europe: Bayern Munich and Dortmund are both drawing in their respective games, with the latter so far drawing blanks at home to Wolfsburg. In Barcelona, it’s half-time in the Catalan derby, with Espanyol frustrating the hosts at Camp Nou.

As the players head out of the tunnel to get the second half started at Old Trafford, a nice add to that Manchester United goalscoring stat, courtesy of Anthony McGrath. “The next time Martial scores it will be four players in double figures for the first time since 95-96 (Scholes, Cantona, Giggs and Cole),” he says, via email. Lovely stuff.

So, as it stands, Huddersfield will live to fight another Premier League day. Their game at Crystal Palace has hardly been a humdinger. A smattering of boos from home supporters at the interval says it all. As for Wolves, their minds are seemingly elsewhere, with a date with Manchester United and a FA Cup semi-final on the horizon. They have been decidedly off-colour at Turf Moor, where Nuno has rested a couple of key faces: namely Matt Doherty and the brilliant Raúl Jiménez.

A neat Manchester United stat courtesy of our friends at Opta: they have had three players score 10-plus Premier League goals in 2018-19 (Rashford, Lukaku, Pogba) – the first time they have achieved this feat since 2012-13 (Hernández, Rooney, van Persie).

Half-time scores

Premier League

Burnley 1-0 Wolves
Brighton 0-0 Southampton
Crystal Palace 0-0 Huddersfield
Leicester 1-0 Bournemouth
Manchester United 1-0 Watford

Championship

Aston Villa 1-0 Blackburn
Derby 3-0 Rotherham
Ipswich 0-1 Hull
Leeds 1-1 Millwall
Nottm Forest 0-0 Swansea
QPR 0-1 Bolton
Reading 2-0 Preston
Sheff Utd 1-1 Bristol City
Stoke 0-0 Sheff Weds
Wigan 0-0 Brentford

Things are very much going to plan for Frank Lampard’s Derby ™. They are cruising 3-0 at home to Rotherham, with Martyn Waghorn adding his second of the afternoon. As things stand, they are heading back into the play-offs at the expense of Middlesbrough, who take on league leaders Norwich later. At the bottom of League One, where the fight to avoid relegation encompasses 13-odd teams, AFC Wimbledon lead at Scunthorpe.

Ben Foster superbly denies Anthony Martial! Watford switched off at a corner and Manchester United should have punished Javi Gracia’s men. Elsewhere, Vardy and then Maddison go close to doubling Leicester’s advantage over Bournemouth. And there have still been no shots on target at Turf Moor – but Burnley lead thanks to Conor Coady’s own goal after two minutes. Crystal Palace v Huddersfield and Brighton v Southampton are proving pretty dour.

Leeds are level through Pablo Hernandez! A cracking goal raises the roof at a now rocking Elland Road. Struggling Bolton, meanwhile, lead at QPR courtesy of Will Buckley. As for Preston’s play-off push, that seems to be coming to an abrupt end in Berkshire, with Reading two goals to the good at the Madejski.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Watford (Rashford, 28)

Javi Gracia’s side have bossed the opening half-hour, but Rashford shows great poise to finish off a weighted Luke Shaw pass, dinking home his 13th goal of the season. Elsewhere, Leicester pass up a chance to double their lead. Ricardo Pereira raids down the right, but Vardy scuffs his effort. On the south coast, Danny Ings glares at referee Michael Oliver after falling in the box under a challenge from Montoya while trying to meet Ward-Prowse’s cross.

Patrick Bamford misses a penalty for Leeds! David Martin, the Millwall goalkeeper who gifted Brighton a route into the FA Cup semi-finals a couple of weeks ago, keeps Neil Harris’s side in front at Elland Road. After being cast as a villain, could Martin prove to be the hero this afternoon? Elsewhere in the Football League, Luton lead at Bristol Rovers through James Collins. Charlton are 1-0 up at home to Bradford. Lyle Taylor has scored – again.

Big chance for Bournemouth to find a reply – but Callum Wilson cannot prod home. Kasper Schmeichel gobbles the ball up after good work by the winger Ryan Fraser. Up at Old Trafford, Watford have a made an impressive start, quietening home supporters’ optimism. De Gea has already clawed away a Deeney header.

GOAL! Leicester 1-0 Bournemouth (Morgan, 11)

Chilwell’s half-volley is diverted beyond Asmir Begovic by Wes Morgan. That is the first time the Leicester skipper has scored in successive games. Meanwhile, a couple of big goals in the second tier: Tammy Abraham weighs in with his 22nd this season, as Aston Villa take the lead at home to Blackburn, while Millwall are 1-0 up Leeds! Ben Thompson has silenced Elland Road.

GOAL! Burnley 1-0 Wolves (Wood, 2)

Chris Wood strikes early at Turf Moor, which is bad news for Southampton, Cardiff and co. Dwight McNeil plays a free-kick in to Wood, the striker rounds Rui Patricio and his effort comes back off the post and goes in via Conor Coady. Elsewhere, Notts County, who are bottom of the Football League, lead at Stevenage with Jim O’Brien scoring inside 30 seconds.

Peeeeeeeeeeeep!

And we’re off around the grounds.

Huddersfield’s inevitable relegation could be confirmed today, but Fulham will almost certainly follow them through the trap door:

From Podgorica to Bournemouth to ... Villa Park! Gareth Southgate is in attendance for Aston Villa’s clash with Blackburn Rovers. Is the England manager on Jack Grealish-watch, or just taking in a game at his former club? Dean Smith has named an unchanged side as they look to cement a play-off berth and earn a fifth straight win.

There is almost a full house of Championship action. Last night, West Brom got the better of rivals Birmingham in what was, as some supporters put it, “a brilliant rubbish game”:

A gentle reminder that Huddersfield Town can be relegated this afternoon, should results not go their way. “I’m not thinking about it,” said their head coach, Jan Siewert. “I have a game and I will try to win the game. I only focus on this game. I don’t care what happens on other pitches.” Defeat at Crystal Palace, the team they beat on their Premier League debut two years ago, could spell the end of the road. If they lose at Selhurst Park and both Burnley and Southampton pick up victories, Huddersfield’s relegation to the Championship will be confirmed. If that happens, Huddersfield will match Derby’s unwanted Premier League record of being relegated in March. Siewert has tickled his team selection, with Ben Hamer, Christopher Schindler and Jonathan Hogg all handed starts.

Team news news: Four changes for Solskjær’s first game as the full-time manager, with Anthony Martial replacing Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera and Juan Mata preferred to Diego Dalot and Fred. Phil Jones returns at centre-half in place of Victor Lindelöf. Elsewhere, Danny Ings makes his first Southampton start since 2 February, while Wolves give Raúl Jiménez, who is set to sign on a £30m permanent deal from Benfica, and Matt Doherty breather, presumably with next week in mind; they host Manchester United at Molineux on Tuesday and take on Watford in a FA Cup semi-final five days later. At Leicester, Asmir Begovic is restored to the Bournemouth starting lineup, with Artur Boruc benched.

Preamble

Away from the title race, there is a top-four battle to get excited about and, now Ole Gunnar Solskjær has scribbled his name all over a permanent contract at Manchester United, he is even more determined to get the job done. Looking to spoil the party at Old Trafford this afternoon are Watford, who could return seventh depending on how Wolves fare at struggling Burnley. United, meanwhile, want to get back on track after consecutive defeats. “We can’t say that we’re happy with just top four, although a top-four finish would be fantastic, but to get to the final in the FA Cup and win a trophy would be brilliant,” Solskjær said. In Sussex, Southampton take on Brighton looking to create some breathing space between them and the bottom three, while victory for Chris Hughton’s side will make them feel a lot better about themselves.

Beyond the Premier League action, there are plenty of biggies in the Championship, none more so than at Bramall Lane, where Sheffield United entertain Bristol City. Play-off chasing Aston Villa take on Blackburn, while Preston visit lowly Reading. And then, on the continent, there is the small matter of the Catalan derby between Barcelona and Espanyol. Then there is the Bundesliga, in which Dortmund host Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich – who lead the division over the former on goal difference – travel to Freiburg.

Saturday’s Premier League fixtures

Fulham v Manchester City 12.30pm (GMT)
Brighton v Southampton
Burnley v Wolves
Crystal Palace v Huddersfield
Leicester v Bournemouth
Manchester United v Watford
West Ham v Everton 5.30pm

*all 3pm kick-offs unless specified
