Full-time: Man United 1-2 Man City
Full-time at Old Trafford: And breathe. Having completely dominated the first 40 minutes, Manchester City eventually edge a thrilling game by the skin of their teeth. Kevin De Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho scored the goals that put City two goals ahead, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic capitalised on an error from Claudio Bravo to pull one back just before half time. The second half was a real white-knuckle ride, but neither side could trouble the scoreboard operator again, despite creating enough chances to win half a season’s worth of football matches.
Updated
90+5 min: United launch balls into the City box and Bravo fails to deal with yet another one, forcing John Stones to hack clear. He’s had a debut to forget in goal for City, but it’s going to be a winning one.
90+3 min: A snap-shot from Ibrahimovic takes a deflection which wrong-foots Claudio Bravo but sails wide of the upright. A corner for Manchester United, but Pogba fouls Bravo and City win a free-kick in their own penalty area.
90+2 min: It still seems remarkable that nobody’s scored in a second half that’s been played at a furious gallop, with both sides creating plenty of chances. Zlatan pulls the latest one wide from outside the City penalty area.
89 min: The game enters its closing stages with Pablo Zabaleta coming on for Nolito. Nope, hold on - Pep’s changed his mind and is bringing on Kevin De Bruyne instead. He’s had a brilliant match today, although perhaps should have scored more than one goal. We’ll have five minutes of added time.
87 min: Daley Blind plays a diagonal ball into the Manchester City penalty area from deep, which Ibrahimovic knocks down. With Rooney ready to pounce, Otamendi is on hand to msother him again. Brilliant defending, or are Rooney’s reflexes getting slower?
85 min: Rooney looked through on goal and ready to pull the trigger there, but was crowded off the ball by Nicolas Otamendi as he attempted to get on the end of a knockdown. City promptly attack on the break and it’s Eric Bailly who’s pressed in to service to prevent Fernando getting off a shot.
83 min: Wayne Rooney finally gets booked for a late challenge on Claudio Bravo, who was dawdling on the ball before getting a pass away. Payback for that two-footed lunge from earlier, I suspect.
Updated
82 min: Manchester United substitution: Luke Shaw off, Anthony Martial on.
79 min: This is a thrilling game, with chance after chance falling for each team; it’s hard to know how there haven’t been any goals in this second half. De Bruyne fields a pass in the penalty area with his back to goal, but is dispossessed by Daley Blind. Moments later, Nolito sends an effort wafting across the face of goal.
77 min: Wayne Rooney concedes another free-kick but manages to avoid a yellow card despite two obvious yellow card offences and persistent fouling. City have a free-kick just outside the United penalty area in a promising position, but De Bruyne wastes it.
75 min: Silva curls the ball a foot or two wide of the top left-hand corner withy a fine effort from just outside the Manchester City penalty area. Moments previously, Kevin De Bruyne had made a wonderful run into the Manchester United penalty, hitting the foot of one upright and then looking on in agony as the ball rolled across the face of goal and inches wide of the other one.
Updated
74 min: Wonderful play by De Gea, who sends Rashford gadding down the left flank with a wonderful pass. His attempt to pick out Ibrahimovic with a fine cross is cut out by Fernando’s crucial interception.
73 min: Manchester City win a corner. Kevin De Bruyne sends the ball sailing into the penalty area, where Fernandinho gets a good header on it. De Gea saves well.
Updated
70 min: Marcus Rashford gets the ball in the net for Manchester United, but his effort is ruled out because Zlatan strayed offside in the build-up. I think Rashford’s shot past Bravo might have taken a slight deflection off the Swede.
68 min: Gary Neville is on co-comm’s for Sky Sports today, while Jamie Carragher is providion additional analysis. The former, who is never slow to criticise goalkeepers who aren’t named Joe Hart, has had a right old go at Claudio Bravo this afternoon. The latter, who wrote a stirring defence of Wayne Rooney during the week, has been fairly quiet on that particular topic today. Rooney’s had worse matches for Manchester United this season, but he’s been far from impressive here. Paul Pogba, meanwhile, has been anonymous.
Updated
66 min: More route one football, as Marouane Fellaini gets on the end of a long ball and knocks it into the path of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He shapes to shoot as John Stones scrambles back to avert the danger. The centre-half does just enough to put Zlatan off and the Manchester United man shoots over the bar from the edge of the penalty area.
62 min: United win a free-kick wide on the right, a long way out. Rooney stands the ball up at the far post, just to see what Claudio Bravo will do next. There’s no John Stones on hand to impede the keeper this time and he plucks the ball from the sky with ease.
61 min:City attack on the counter with five players up against Manchester United’s four. Kevin De Bruyne goes on a diagonal run into the penalty area and attempts to drill the ball across the face of goal, but it’s cleared.
61 min: Manchester City substitution: Leroy Sane on for Raheem Sterling.
59 min: Rooney appeals for a penalty when the ball hits the back of Nicolas Otamendi’s elbow. Nice try, Wayne.
57 min: Claudio Bravo is very lucky to avoid conceding a penalty and getting a red card for a wild studs up challenge on Wayne Rooney as the pair contested a 50-50 ball in the City penalty area. Bravo was attempting to play the ball out from the back, but is forced into his wild lunge after a poor touch. It looked a penalty and red card to me.
Updated
55 min: It would be interesting to hear Guardiola’s thoughts on Iheanacho’s performance. The teenage striker scored and provided an assist, but was also responsible for giving the ball away cheaply in the build-up to the free-kick that led to Manchester United’s goal. He got an awful bollocking for that from his manager.
Updated
54 min: Manchester United are dominating the early stages of this second half, having looked a busted flush as far as this match was concerned a few minutes before half-time. Pep Guardiola takes off Kelechi Iheanacho and replaces him with Fernando.
Updated
53 min: Fellaini. Elbow. Kolarov. Yellow card. It wasn’t one for his showreel - he’s played a lot more fast and loose with in the past.
51 min: Zlatan gets booked for an unnecessary and rather agricultural challenge on Nicolas Otamendi, deep in Manchester City territory.
49 min: Manchester City win a free-kick just outside their own penalty area, which Claudio Bravo sends floating the length of the pitch. His opposite number deals with it.
46 min: Marcus Rashford makes an instant impression, having taken up position on the left of the front three. He turns Bacary Sagna, advances into the area and scoops the ball across the face of the six yard box. The onrushing Paul Pogba is unable to make contact with the ball, while it drops for Zlatan who sends it fizzing over the bar.
Second-half: Man United 1-2 Man City
Manchester United kick-off, having made two half-time changes. Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford come on for Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Some housekeeping: Eric Bailly was booked just before the interval.
Half-time: Man United 1-2 Man City
Well, that was fun. Manchester City were totally dominant for 42 minutes, going ahead through the kind of route one goal scored by Kevin De Bruyne that Pep Guardiola may never have seen before in his life. They doubled their lead through Kelechi Iheanacho, but allowed Manchester United to pull a goal back through Zlatan Ibrahimovic following a terrible rick by footwork’s Claudio Bravo that will have Joe Hart in paroxysms of mirth over in Turin. Ibrahimovic could and probably should have levelled the game for United, but couldn’t get enough power on his shot after another rush of blood to the head from Claudio Bravo.
Updated
45+2 min: Claudio Bravo finishes the half playing like a City fan who won a competition where first prize was the opportunity to play for their team in a Manchester derby at Old Trafford. Following a completely unnecessary mix-up with Bacary Sagna, he allows Jesse Lingard to tee up Zlatan Ibrahimovic to slot the ball into what looks like an unguarded net. The striker doesn’t kick the ball hard enough, allowing John Stones to get back and clear off the line.
Updated
44 min: So, more on that goal. United had a free-kick just inside City’s half and Rooney sent the ball wafting high into the penalty area. Under pressure from John Stones, Bravo flapped at the ball and it broke to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. His finish was sublime as he rifled home on the half-volley from a reasonably tight angle.
GOAL! Man United 1-2 Man City (Ibrahimovic 43)
Much has been made of Claudio Bravo’s fancy footwork since he signed for Manchester City, but it’s his glovework that looks questionable here. He fails to deal with a cross to the far post, the ball breaks to Zlatan and the Swede slots home to put Manchester United back into the game.
Updated
41 min: David Silva gets booked for a foul on Antonio Valencia just in front of the technical area.
38 min: Crikey! A team of training cones would have put up a more stirring defence against the attack that led to that goal. Apparently spellbound by the manner in which Manchester City’s attackers have been running rings around them, United’s defenders stood motionless as Kevin De Bruyne picked up the ball in the penalty area and fired towards the bottom left-hand corner. The ball hit the foot of the upright and rebounded to Iheanacho, who was quickest to react as he slotted into an empty net from six yards. Forlornly looking to the linesman in the hope that he might have been offside, Manchester United’s players aren’t spared by the sight of his flag being held aloft.

GOAL! Man United 0-2 Man City (Iheanacho 36)
Kelechi Iheanacho doubles Manchester City’s lead, scoring into an empty net from six yards after Kevin De Bruyn had hit the upright.
Updated
33 min: While they’re all being run ragged, no Manchester United defender is having a more torrid afternoon than Antonio Valencia, who has clearly been targeted as a weakness by Manchester City. If United can avoid conceding a second goal before half-time, it will be intriguing to see how Jose Mourinho plays his hand at half-time.
30 min: Nolito and Marouane Fellaini have a frank exchange of views after the former accuses the latter of dragging out of his shirt as he attempted to sprint into the United penalty area. Fellaini was hanging on to him for dear life, much like his team-mates have been for long periods of this first half.
28 min: Mkhitaryan is flagged for offside as he chases a ball through the centre. He doesn’t hear the whistle, goes down under a challenge from Claudio Bravo and appeals for a penalty, but none is forthcoming. Free-kick for City.
Updated
26 min: Wayne Rooney dawdles on the ball and loses possession to David Silva, then clatters into a couple of x-rated PG-rated challenges out of frustration. He gets a ticking-off, but no booking.
24 min: Rooney plays the ball down the right wing for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to chase. He gets on it and attempts to send in a cross for the incoming Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but the ball’s put out for a corner which Nolito hacks clear.
23 min: Manchester United continue to dominate possession, with Nolito skipping into the United penalty area and trying to pick out Sterling. Manchester United scramble clear. The home side are on the ropes here - playing without the ball is all well and good if you’re able to do it, but United’s defence are being stretched and run to breaking point here.
Updated
20 min: Imagine Kelechi Iheanacho as John Fashanu and Kevin De Bruyne as Terry Gibson and that goal could scarcely have been more Wimbledon 1986-87 if you’d choreographed it. Aleksandar Kolarov, it was, who provided the long ball from deep which Iheanacho flicked on. Welcome to England, Pep.
Updated
17 min: With Manchester United on a counter-attack and most of the players high up the pitch, the ball was played Route One from deep towards Kelechi Iheanacho, who won the header against Eric Bailly and flicked the ball into space in front of the Manchester United penalty area. With Daley Blind standing looking mesmerised, Kevin De Bruyne nipped in to take the ball past him and then slot it into the bottom left-hand corner from the edge of the penalty area.

GOAL! Man United 0-1 Man City (De Bruyne 15)
The most impressive player on the pitch puts the most impressive team on the pitch ahead. And after all the talk of tactics, tiki-taka, flase nines and inside-out full-backs, the goal could not have been more direct.
Updated
14 min: Wayne Rooney castigates himself after giving away possession cheaply. You’d think he might be used to it after the Hull City game.
11 min: Manchester City continue to dominate, but Manchester United embark on another counter-attack that is snuffed out when Mkhitaryan runs down a blind alley. It’s been reasonably entertaining so far, but with no clear-cut chances of note to report this far.
9 min: Kevin De Bruyne proves a menace on the channel between Manchester United right-back and centre-back once again, drawing a foul from Eric Bailly, which earns City a free-kick just outside the penalty area. Aleksandar Kolarov shoots high and wide.
Updated
8 min: Manchester United attack on the counter and after picking up a cross-field pass from Wayne Rooney, Henrikh Mkhitaryan tees up Paul Pogba for a long range effort from the edge of the City penalty area. High and wide.
7 min: City are looking the more threatening in these early stages, with Kevin De Bruyne and Nolito both looking dangerous in the channels between Manchester United’s full-backs and centre-backs. Nolito cuts in from the left flank and pokes the ball into the area, where Luke Shaw hacks clear.
5 min: Manchester City win a corner which David Silva clips towards the near post. Marouane Fellaini hacks clear on the volley.
3 min: Manchester City’s first line of attack, Claudio Bravo, comes about 20 yards out of his area and pings the ball forward into midfield. It’s moved up the inside left channel, where Kevin De Bruyne makes a darting run between Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly and squares the ball towards Raheem Sterling at the far post. Manchester United clear.
2 min: Wayne Rooney picks up the ball on the edge of the City penalty area and plays it wide to Antonio Valencia on the right touchline. With four Man Utd players waiting in the penalty area, he fails to send the ball into them.
Manchester United v Manchester City is go!
Referee Mark Clattenburg has a quick word with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, blows his whistle and Manchester City kick off. They’re playing in light blue shirts and shorts with white socks, while United’s players are wearing red shirts, white shorts and black socks.
A warm embrace between the managers ...
There’s a warm handshake and a hug between Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho. Now we’ve got that tedious but obligatory nonsense out of the way, let’s get on with some football.
Not long now ...
The teams line up in the tunnel and are led out by Wayne Rooney and David Silva as they make their way up from the the tunnel to line up for the pre-match formalities. Kick off is in three minutes.
This could be quite a bruising encounter ...
Manchester United are fielding quite a few giants in Marouane Fellaini, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all likely to impose themselves on a Manchester City side that is comparatively teeny-weeny side.
An interesting selection from José Mourinho
The Manchester United manager has, as expected, left Marcus Rashford on the bench and the in-form teenager could prove a potent weapon if United require somebody to run at a tired defence in the final 20 minutes if required.
Of the Manchester United team that beat Hull City 1-0, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata make way for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard, who makes his first Premier League appearance of the season.
For Manchester City, Claudio Bravo starts in goal, while Bacary Sagna replaces Pablo Zabaleta at right-back. With Sergio Aguero suspended, Kelechi Iheanacho starts up front for Pep Guardiola’s side.
