Manchester United v Liverpool postponed: United condemn ‘disruption’ and ‘danger’ of Old Trafford fan protests

Manchester United have condemned the disruption caused by the protests at Old Trafford on Sunday and said some supporters “put other fans, staff, and the police in danger”.

Sunday's Premier League clash between Manchester United and Liverpool was postponed after around 200 fans broke into Old Trafford to protest against the Glazer family.

Some fans broke through barriers outside Old Trafford to get into the stadium and invaded the pitch. Some let off flares and one was thrown towards the platform being used by Sky Sports, while flares were also thrown at police outside the Lowry Hotel, where players were staying.

In a statement, Manchester United said they “completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest”.

But the club slammed the actions of some fans.

A United statement read: "Following discussion between the Police, the Premier League, Trafford Council and the clubs, our match against Liverpool has been postponed due to safety and security considerations around the protest today.

"Discussions will now take place with the Premier League on a revised date for the fixture.

"Our fans are passionate about Manchester United, and we completely acknowledge the right to free expression and peaceful protest.

"However, we regret the disruption to the team and actions which put other fans, staff, and the police in danger.

“We thank the police for their support and will assist them in any subsequent investigations."
