Before that interview, on Sky they were watching and discussing Harry Wilson’s free kick. Darren Bent declared it the best free-kick he has ever seen. Then he is shown a similar effort by Cristiano Ronaldo when the Portuguese was at Old Trafford. Suddenly Wilson’s isn’t so great after all. “I think I like Ronaldo’s,” he says.
José Mourinho speaks:
You know, what happened that we didn’t score when we could, and we could in the first half, we had good situations to kill it. We didn’t, and at half-time I repeat the same words I say in the last match, saying their dressing-room was a dressing-room with belief and we need to go and to kill the game, which we didn’t. We couldn’t be dominant in the beginning of the second half and only after their equaliser we had again that reaction. I prefer to be proactive and to go for it, but we go for it only after the 1-1.
After the red card we were in a bit of difficulty but even with one man less it was a reaction of pride. Then the penalties come and somebody has to miss. When I saw going after the sixth, the seventh, I knew we were going to be in trouble with Jones, with Eric. I knew we were in trouble then.
[He then argues with the interviewer about whether he was criticising his team, which he says he wasn’t] You want me to say we did a phenomenal match? The truth is, the opponent in the second half start better than us and we were not able to match that intensity, which we did after the 1-1, which we did even with 10 men.
Is [the defeat] a worry? The Carabao Cup is no longer a worry. It’s the minor of the competitions we’re involved in. But we wanted to win the match and are disappointed that we drew. And the new rules would put the favourite team more in danger, because with the draw you had in the past 30 more minutes to play, without the extra time you go direct to penalties and I think it goes against the team that normally in 30 minutes extra time would win the match. Then you go to penalties and I never blame a player to miss a penalty. We knew from training that we would be in trouble if it went to Jones, if it went to Eric Bailly.
Finally, he’s asked about stories that he has fallen out with Paul Pogba and stripped him of the vice-captaincy:
The only truth is I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain any more. But no fall-out, no problem. I am the manager, I can make these decisions. No problem at all, no fall-out at all, just a decision that I don’t have to explain.

Frank Lampard has a chat:
I’m a bit shell-shocked. What a performance from the team, and in terms of personality to go 1-0 down early on, toplay the way they did, to get back into the game, to get ahead, and then there’s six minutes of extra time. To have the personality, to stand up and take the penalties. I’m just a proud manager.
The players were so good against Brentford I felt they deserved it. The 11 players who started deserved to go again. I wanted to bring a team here to really compete. I’m just so proud of them.
It’s there [with my best results]. When you manage you take responsibility day in day out, trying to improve in any way you can. When you try to build a bit of a family, a group that can be successful, nights like that are unbelievable. To come to Old Trafford, go against world class players and play the way they did … it’s an incredible feeling for me, it’s right up there.
The scoreline was nothing like as emphatic as many had predicted, or probably feared in the case of Oxford United’s supporters, but there was never the slightest doubt that Manchester City would take their place in the next round of the competition they won back in February. Gabriel Jesus’s second goal of the season, followed by a third in four days for Riyad Mahrez, allowed City to brush aside Oxford before Phil Foden scored in injury time.

We wanted to come here, play our football and go toe to toe with United, and we’ve done that and come out on top. It was one of them. It was a bit far out to maybe curl it so I just put my laces through it and get a bit of movement. Thankfully I’ve done that and it nestled in the far corner. We got confidence from the way we played first half. We grew into the game and I thought we deserve to get our equaliser and then to go ahead.
And Jack Marriott, who scored what looked like a winner but then wasn’t:
I did think I’d scored the winner, but the game’s never done until the final whistle goes. But to win it on penalties was just as sweet. He’s got us playing, we’re playing with confidence and we back our ability whenever we step on the pitch. We’re all celebrating together and that shows what a tight-knit group we are.

It was a moment to further age the hard-bitten souls in attendance. In the 81st minute of this Carabao Cup tie, Slavisa Jokanovic sent on Harvey Elliott for his professional debut. The Fulham winger was 15 years and 174 days old.
The Surrey schoolboy became the youngest player to appear for Fulhamwhile it is also believed that he became the most youthful player in this competition’s history.

This recently came through from the Press Association:
Paul Pogba has been told by manager Jose Mourinho that he will never captain Manchester United again, according to reports.
Preparations for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup match against Derby were disrupted by claims that the club-record signing’s tense relationship with the manager has reached a new low.
Pogba was not pictured with the United squad ahead of the third-round tie and was reported by the Times and ESPN to have been told earlier in the day in front of the squad that he would not skipper the side again as he does not embody what the club is about.
United were not able to comment on the matter when contacted by Press Association Sport, but the incident was expected to be broached with Mourinho before or after the match against Derby.

As it happens I was at Derby’s impressive training ground yesterday for a chat with the even more impressive Frank Lampard. His managerial chops remain unproven but he’s unusually eloquent, good-natured and generous with his time, and in all respects precisely the kind of manager journalists warm to.
So far Derby seem to be responding well to his presence, and by all accounts were excellent against Brentford on Saturday. Mason Mount scored again, his fifth of the season in all competitions. When I read Simon Hattenstone’s excellent interview with Kevin Keegan today, and saw his comments about the current England team – which he says has “the same problem that England have had for a long time since Gazza went. Where’s your Eden Hazard, your David Silva, your De Bruyne? Where are they? There’s an orchestra there, but nobody to conduct.” – my thoughts immediately turned to Mount (though there are other potential candidates).
Last season there were eight goals and nine assists in 29 Eredivisie matches for Vitesse Arnhem, although he turned 19 only in January. He’s an excellent prospect, and Lampard seems confident in his ability to play at international level. Lampard also suggested that he’d play today – “I don’t want to heap huge pressure on him in terms of [this game] because Mason Mount will play at Old Trafford more times than just tomorrow,” he said. “He’ll play at all the top grounds.” – and it will be interesting to see how he performs. Lampard might also choose a few other youngsters, including Harry Wilson, the 21-year-old winger, on loan from Liverpool, who also scored against Brentford, and Jayden Bogle, who turned 18 only in July and has emerged as Derby’s first-choice right-back.
