Right, I’m done here. Here’s another link to the match report. It’s been a blast. Bye!
“It’s time this boring, self opinionated, narcissistic man gets out of Old Trafford,” rages Darren Madden. “His style is so boring and not the style that United fans demand and have been spoilt with in the Fergie years. Mourinho goes 2-0 and shuts up shop whilst our neighbours across the City will try and score 6 or 7. We look on in envy at City and crave a tenth of their creativity and team spirit. When we all saw the welcome return of Fergie on Saturday I would say 99% of fans were wanting him to go down to the dugout and say to Manchester’s Alan Partridge, ‘Get out and let me manage my team again.’”
Before that interview, on Sky they were watching and discussing Harry Wilson’s free kick. Darren Bent declared it the best free-kick he has ever seen. Then he is shown a similar effort by Cristiano Ronaldo when the Portuguese was at Old Trafford. Suddenly Wilson’s isn’t so great after all. “I think I like Ronaldo’s,” he says.
José Mourinho speaks:
You know, what happened that we didn’t score when we could, and we could in the first half, we had good situations to kill it. We didn’t, and at half-time I repeat the same words I say in the last match, saying their dressing-room was a dressing-room with belief and we need to go and to kill the game, which we didn’t. We couldn’t be dominant in the beginning of the second half and only after their equaliser we had again that reaction. I prefer to be proactive and to go for it, but we go for it only after the 1-1.
After the red card we were in a bit of difficulty but even with one man less it was a reaction of pride. Then the penalties come and somebody has to miss. When I saw going after the sixth, the seventh, I knew we were going to be in trouble with Jones, with Eric. I knew we were in trouble then.
[He then argues with the interviewer about whether he was criticising his team, which he says he wasn’t] You want me to say we did a phenomenal match? The truth is, the opponent in the second half start better than us and we were not able to match that intensity, which we did after the 1-1, which we did even with 10 men.
Is [the defeat] a worry? The Carabao Cup is no longer a worry. It’s the minor of the competitions we’re involved in. But we wanted to win the match and are disappointed that we drew. And the new rules would put the favourite team more in danger, because with the draw you had in the past 30 more minutes to play, without the extra time you go direct to penalties and I think it goes against the team that normally in 30 minutes extra time would win the match. Then you go to penalties and I never blame a player to miss a penalty. We knew from training that we would be in trouble if it went to Jones, if it went to Eric Bailly.
Finally, he’s asked about stories that he has fallen out with Paul Pogba and stripped him of the vice-captaincy:
The only truth is I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain any more. But no fall-out, no problem. I am the manager, I can make these decisions. No problem at all, no fall-out at all, just a decision that I don’t have to explain.
After José Mourinho told Paul Pogba he will never be captain again came a night to test the manager as a Phil Jones’s miss from Manchester United’s eighth kick in the penalty shootout sent Derby County through and knocked United out of the Carabao Cup.
More from Old Trafford:
A bit more from Lamps:
The next test is consistency. The next test is Bolton at the weekend. We have to do that regularly, because we want to get up to the Premier League. We’ve found out that if you don’t turn up or if you lack the intensity that we had tonight, you’ll lose games. My job is to get them up and going again but I haven’t got a problem with that.
Frank Lampard has a chat:
I’m a bit shell-shocked. What a performance from the team, and in terms of personality to go 1-0 down early on, toplay the way they did, to get back into the game, to get ahead, and then there’s six minutes of extra time. To have the personality, to stand up and take the penalties. I’m just a proud manager.
The players were so good against Brentford I felt they deserved it. The 11 players who started deserved to go again. I wanted to bring a team here to really compete. I’m just so proud of them.
It’s there [with my best results]. When you manage you take responsibility day in day out, trying to improve in any way you can. When you try to build a bit of a family, a group that can be successful, nights like that are unbelievable. To come to Old Trafford, go against world class players and play the way they did … it’s an incredible feeling for me, it’s right up there.
The scoreline was nothing like as emphatic as many had predicted, or probably feared in the case of Oxford United’s supporters, but there was never the slightest doubt that Manchester City would take their place in the next round of the competition they won back in February. Gabriel Jesus’s second goal of the season, followed by a third in four days for Riyad Mahrez, allowed City to brush aside Oxford before Phil Foden scored in injury time.
More from the Kassam Stadium:
A couple of Derby players have had a quick chat. First Harry Wilson, scorer of a wonderful free-kick:
We wanted to come here, play our football and go toe to toe with United, and we’ve done that and come out on top. It was one of them. It was a bit far out to maybe curl it so I just put my laces through it and get a bit of movement. Thankfully I’ve done that and it nestled in the far corner. We got confidence from the way we played first half. We grew into the game and I thought we deserve to get our equaliser and then to go ahead.
And Jack Marriott, who scored what looked like a winner but then wasn’t:
I did think I’d scored the winner, but the game’s never done until the final whistle goes. But to win it on penalties was just as sweet. He’s got us playing, we’re playing with confidence and we back our ability whenever we step on the pitch. We’re all celebrating together and that shows what a tight-knit group we are.

It was a moment to further age the hard-bitten souls in attendance. In the 81st minute of this Carabao Cup tie, Slavisa Jokanovic sent on Harvey Elliott for his professional debut. The Fulham winger was 15 years and 174 days old.
The Surrey schoolboy became the youngest player to appear for Fulhamwhile it is also believed that he became the most youthful player in this competition’s history.

Don’t go away, I have some match reports for you!
It takes some collective mental strength to go from conceding a 95th-minute equaliser to winning a penalty shoot-out that starts seconds later. Their penalties, away at Old Trafford, despite the disappointment of the equaliser, with the crowd whistling and jeering, were sometimes flawless and always excellent.
Updated
What a shoot-out, though! Fifteen consecutive successful spot-kicks, many of them absolutely unstoppable … and then up steps Phil Jones.
Derby County win on penalties! Manchester United are out!
Man Utd 7-8 Derby Phil Jones sidefoots low to his right, but this time Carson goes the right way and, having done so, it’s an easy save!
Updated
Man Utd 7-8 Derby Keogh does likewise, with Grant grasping at thin air!
Man Utd 7-7 Derby Matic strokes the ball into the top left corner!
Man Utd 6-7 Derby Forsyth’s penalty is a cracker, rippling the roof of the net!
Man Utd 6-6 Derby Dalot, on his home debut, slots the ball low to his right with Carson heading in the other direction!
Man Utd 5-6 Derby Grant gets a good hand to Bryson’s penalty, but it goes in anyway!
Man Utd 5-5 Derby Martial’s effort is just like Fred’s, except possibly a little more flawless!
Man Utd 4-5 Derby Johnson goes low to his right. It isn’t a perfect penalty, not hit with great conviction, but and Grant goes the right way, but the ball rolls just inside the post!
Man Utd 4-4 Derby Fred gives Carson absolutely no chance, sending the ball into the top right corner!
Updated
Man Utd 3-4 Derby And Marriott is the third player in a row to shoot low to his left. This time Grant guesses right, but the shot’s too good!
Man Utd 3-3 Derby Fellaini’s penalty is almost exactly the same as Wilson’s, with Carson again going the wrong way!
Man Utd 2-3 Derby Another fine penalty, Wilson going low to his left while Grant heads the wrong way!
Man Utd 2-2 Derby Ashley Young also goes down the middle, powering the ball into the roof of the net with Carson going to his right!
Man Utd 1-2 Derby Jozefzoon hits high down the middle, and though Grant gets a hand to the ball he can’t keep it out!
Man Utd 1-1 Derby Carson moves much too early, and Lukaku shoots low into the empty half of goal!
Man Utd 0-1 Derby What a penalty! Mount sends the ball screaming into the top left corner, with Grant going precisely the wrong way!
Updated
The shoot-out is about to get under way at Old Trafford. Derby will take the first one, and Mount has the ball …
Whatever happens, that was a wildly encouraging performance from Derby (though less encouragingly neither Wilson nor Mount, described as their two outstanding players by people who have actually been able to focus on the game, are theirs).
And that’s the final whistle! Fellaini has saved United’s bacon and taken the match to penalties!
Attack! Attack! Attack! Shout the United fans. Matic takes it a little too literally and is booked for a foul on Mount.
GOAL! Manchester United 2-2 Derby (Fellaini, 90+5 mins)
United have been playing the ball long into the area for the last few minutes, with Fellaini making a nuisance of himself as ever. Then Dalot gets it on the right flank, swings a cross to the far post and the Belgian rises highest to head in from close range!
Updated
Three minutes of stoppage time have been played at Old Trafford, and the ball is at the wrong end as far as United are confirmed. Grant heaves it long, but as the ball bounces over the half-way line Fellaini fouls Johnson and Derby have a free-kick.
Final score: Wolves 0-0 Leicester (Leicester win 3-1 on penalties)
Iheanacho coolly despatches his penalty, and Leicester go through!
Traoré is the latest Wolves player to fail from the spot, and after four penalties each Leicester lead 2-1 and need only score their next to go through!
Into stoppage time at Old Trafford, where they will play for another six minutes. Six!
Wolves have missed their first two penalties against Leicester, who have missed two of their first three themselves.
Two minutes left at Old Trafford, and United are pushing from an equaliser, with all hands to the Derby pump. They win a corner, which is headed down by Fellaini but then poked wide.
Final score: Preston 2-2 Middlesbrough (Boro win 4-3 on penalties)
Graham Burke misses Preston’s final penalty and Middlesbrough, with four from four, don’t have to take their last!
GOAL! Man Utd 1-2 Derby (Marriott, 85 mins)
Derby take the lead! Mount’s shot from the edge of the area is saved by Grant but the ball loops up off his glove and is headed in by Marriott! There are a few nervy moments while the VAR checks that he wasn’t offside – Wilson was, confusing matters a bit – but then the referee points to the centre circle!

Updated
GOAL! West Brom 0-3 Crystal Palace (Townsend, 81 mins)
Another lovely goal from Townsend. This time he cuts in from the right, feints to shoot with his left foot, dummies back onto his right, fools the entire defence and then shoots across goal and in!
Updated
Wolves v Leicester has also gone to a shoot-out! Meanwhile at Deepdale Preston have missed their second spot-kick, Robinson blazing high over the bar.
Preston’s game against Middlesbrough has gone to penalties, extra time no longer being a thing in the Carabao Cup.
Final score: Bournemouth 3-2 Blackburn
And Wilson’s late, late goal has won it!
Leicester’s Demarai Gray has apparently suffered what looks like a potentially serious injury, late in the game at Molineux.
GOAL! Bournemouth 3-2 Blackburn (Wilson, 90+4)
Bournemouth snatch victory in stoppage time! And I didn’t see how they did it!
Back to Old Trafford, where Bogle crosses from the right and Jozefzoon, just on as a substitute, heads the ball down. It looks destined for the bottom corner before Grant, diving to his left, pushes it past the post!
GOAL! West Brom 0-2 Crystal Palace (Van Aanholt, 76 mins)
Another fine shot from the edge of the area, and it finds the top corner!
Final score: Burton Albion 2-1 Burnley
Burton are in the fourth round for the first time in their history, and top-flight Burnley are out!
GOAL! Oxford 0-3 Man City (Foden, 90+2 mins)
Sterling carries the ball 40 yards before finding Foden to his left, and his first-time shot arrows low across goal and in!
GOAL! Blackpool 2-0 QPR (Spearing, 90 mins)
The ball is dribbled from the left wing into the penalty area and then prodded back to Spearing, lurking on its edge, who hits a lovely first-time, left-footed shot inside the near post to (surely) clinch victory!
Manchester United hit the post! Lukaku has the ball on the edge of the area, surrounded by defenders and facing the wrong way, the situation apparently unpromising. But suddenly he shifts his feet and spears the ball against the near post!
Back at Old Trafford Mount takes the free-kick, which hits the wall.
Meanwhile at Millwall Harvey Elliott has come on for Fulham. He’s just 15, the youngest player in the club’s history.
Now, can Wilson produce another set-piece zinger?
Juan Mata goes off and Lee Grant, who played more than 100 times for Derby, comes on to make his United debut.
Manchester United go down to 10 men!
Sergio Romero has been sent off, and United are in trouble here! Nugent plays the ball over the defence, Wilson tries to poke it around the advancing goalkeeper and Romero deliberately handles outside his area!
Updated
GOAL! Burton 2-1 Burnley (Allen, 83 mins)
A strangely easy goal, this. There’s nothing particularly clever about the build-up, which involves absolutely zero closing down followed by even less marking. In the end the ball is poked through to Jamie Allen, whose finish is assured.
Updated
GOAL! Wycombe 3-4 Norwich (McCarthy, 75 mins)
A cross from the left leads to chaos – a shot, deflected to another forward, another shot, deflected against the crossbar, and another shot, bundling the ball in!
GOAL! Oxford 0-2 Man City (Mahrez, x mins)
City break after a set piece and Foden’s long, low pass finds Mahrez, who has time to control poorly, recover, race into the area and score with aplomb!
Updated
GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Derby (Wilson, 59 mins)
Derby equalise with a delicious free-kick, curled in from, what, 35 yards? The goalkeeper takes a couple of steps to his left before it’s kicked, and then doesn’t move as the ball flies past him in the other direction! He probably couldn’t have stopped it anyway – that was perfect!
Updated
GOAL! Bournemouth 2-2 Blackburn (Armstrong, 72 mins)
Another penalty, and this – like every other Carabao Cup spot-kick this evening – is sent to the kicker’s right. This time the keeper goes the right way, but he can’t keep it out and Blackburn have pulled themselves level!
Updated
QPR have gone down to 10 men, Jordan Cousins, already on a booking, following a bad foul with some handbags and being sent on his way.
GOAL! Millwall 1-3 Fulham (Christie, 68 mins)
And that’s better still! Christie cuts in from the right flank and unleashes a dipping screamer that flies across goal and in!
GOAL! Preston 2-2 Middlesbrough (Tavernier, 69 mins)
That’s a great shot, from a good 25 yards, which ruffles the right-hand side of the netting as it flies in!
Oooooh! How did that stay out? The ball comes off Bailly and bounces to Wilson, who has time to control, look up, assess his options and shoot. It hits Romero and spins just wide of the far post!
GOAL! Preston 2-1 Middlesbrough (Barkhuzen, 66 mins)
I’ve no idea how that went in. It was a decent enough shot, but it was from a long way out and looked to be going straight at the goalkeeper, until the moment it went past him.
GOAL! Wycombe 2-4 Norwich (Saunders, 61 mins)
From the penalty spot Sam Saunders goes high to his right, and the keeper goes low to his left (Saunders’ left, not the keeper’s)!
GOAL! Bournemouth 2-1 Blackburn (Conway, 63 mins)
Conway robs a defender with ridiculous ease 45 yards out, runs towards the area and from 20 yards blasts a shot into the net!
GOAL! Millwall 1-2 Fulham (Elliott, 61 mins)
A corner from the left, a header in the middle, and Millwall are back in the game!
GOAL! Burton 1-1 Burnley (Boyce, 62 mins)
A loose ball falls to Boyce, on the right-hand corner of the penalty area, and he drills a low shot towards the near post which the keeper fumbles in!
Updated
GOAL! Bournemouth 2-0 Blackburn (Ibe, 58 mins)
Ibe passes low to his right and the ball nestles in the corner, the goalkeeper diving entirely the wrong way!
Bournemouth have a penalty! Jordan Ibe gets past his marker, reaches the byline, cuts inside and then falls over. Was there a tug of the shirt? The referee thinks so!
GOAL! Wycombe 1-4 Norwich (Rhodes, 51 mins)
Jordan Rhodes has a hat-trick! Buendia floats a pass into the box and Rhodes runs onto it, lets it bounce across him and then prods it in with his right peg!
Updated
GOAL! Millwall 0-2 Fulham (De la Torre, 52 mins)
The ball is played low from the left into the area, where Luca de la Torre is standing all alone to control, shift it out of his feet and pass it into the net!
It’s half-time at Old Trafford, where United lead 1-0.
Andros Townsend nearly has another! This time he confounded everyone by cutting inside from the left onto his right foot, before chipping a shot that would have looped under the bar at the far post had it not been headed off the line.
Mason Mount has looked bright, both in open play and with set pieces, but the ball was just passed to him on the left wing, and he took his eyes off it at the vital moments and it flew under his foot and off for a throw-in.
I’ve had nothing to say about Wolves v Leicester, but I can now inform you that it is now half-time, and still goalless.
GOAL! Wycombe 1-3 Norwich (Trybull, 41 mins)
Vrancic’s corner from the right finds Trybull standing, lonely as a cloud, inside the penalty area and he heads back across goal and in!
GOAL! Burton 0-1 Burnley (Long, 40 mins)
And this one counts! A corner on the left is headed into the far corner by Long!
What a miss! Martial takes the ball past his man on the left flank, gets to the byline and lifts a cross over the grasping arm of Scott Carson and onto the head of Lukaku, who heads over from a yard!
Updated
Burnley have had two goals ruled out for offside now, with Defour claiming both non-assists.
GOAL! Oxford 0-1 Man City (Jesus, 36 mins)
Oxford enjoyed a half-hour of glorious parity, but it’s over! Foden’s fabulous crossfield pass finds Diaz on the left of the area, and his shot deflects off a defender onto the head of Jesus at the far post, who heads in.
Updated
GOAL! Preston 1-1 Middlesbrough (Fletcher, 34 mins)
A lovely through-ball and Fletcher collects it, ghosts past the goalkeeper and slots into the empty net, a fraction of a second before he’s taken out from behind in what would have been a hilarious goal-denying professional foul had it not been for its tardiness.
“Andros Townsend decides to pull out a 30 yarder against my Baggies?” wails JR. “You gotta be bleeping me. I suppose it didn’t hurt that two defenders escorted him to cut inside and essentially formally invited him to shoot. Nuts.” You’d have thought it might have cropped up in training.
GOAL! Blackpool 1-0 QPR (Gnanduillet, 28 mins)
I can’t tell you much about this goal, except for that it happened.
Another great chance at Old Trafford, where Lukaku robs the last defender, turns, runs at goal and then shoots wide.
Updated
GOAL! Preston 1-0 Middlesbrough (Robinson, 27 mins)
Robinson get the ball with his back to goal, maybe 10 yadrs out, and spins before shooting low into the net!
Another great chance at Old Trafford, this time for the home team. Young hits a pass over the defence and, with various Derby players standing around with their hands in the air, Mata runs through, controls and shoots against the keeper.
GOAL! West Brom 0-1 Crystal Palace (Townsend, 6 mins)
You’ll never guess how Townsend has just scored! OK, you will. He cut in from the right and curled a shot inside the far post with his left foot.
A great chance for Derby to equalise as Mount’s pass into the area picks out Bennett, who should have scored but instead hit Romero.
Updated
GOAL! Wycombe 1-2 Norwich (Cowan-Hall, 17 mins)
Goaltastic action continues. A corner comes in, a header from deep back into the mixer is nodded into the bar by a defender and drops to Paris Cowan-Hall, who taps in!
GOAL! Man Utd 1-0 Derby (Mata, 3 mins)
And now United lead! It’s a lovely, lovely goal. Martial motors down the left and crosses low to Lukaku, who dummies to let the ball run to Lingard, who prods first-time to Mata to the right of the area, and he curls a shot with his left foot back across goal and in at the far post.
United have the first chance of the night with less than two minutes played, Lukaku heading low and Carson saving.
GOAL! Wycombe 0-2 Norwich (Rhodes, 14 mins)
That one’s a cracker, sent looping into the top right corner from the edge of the area!
GOAL! Bournemouth 1-0 Blackburn (Stanislas, 14 mins)
That’s a fine hip-high volley, hit while swivelling from the edge of the area!
GOAL! Wycombe 0-1 Norwich (Rhodes, 12)
Jordan Rhodes puts Norwich one up at Wycombe, but it doesn’t stay that way for long!
Lampard and Mourinho engage in their second televised hug of the evening. Ready for kick-off!
At Old Trafford, the two teams have emerged from the tunnel.
GOAL! Millwall 0-1 Fulham (Bryan, 7 mins)
Fulham have made 10 changes but certainly aren’t playing like strangers, Bryan hitting a low shot from an angle between the goalkeeper’s legs and in after seven minutes!
The two managers speak. First Frank Lampard, on why he’s picked an unchanged team:
The players deserve to play. The way they played against Brentford they deserve to go again. I can only pick 11 and the way they performed means they get a crack at the game tonight. If we need to make changes we’ve got people ont he bench
And on coming up against Jose Mourinho:
It’s an absolute pleasure. I’ve spoken a lot about what Jose Mourinho means to me. It’ll be lovely to see him before, but when we get out there it’s game on.
And here’s Mourinho on leaving out the likes of Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw:
Rested. I gave a rest to Luke, to Paul, to Viktor, Valencia, David. I gave a rest to these five players. I knew I couldn’t give much more. I knew I had to play a very good team because I was expecting from Frank, from Derby, what they would bring.
And on coming up against a former player:
It’s not strange, it’s nice. he was one of the best players I’ve worked with, and one of the best professionals. Not at all will be strange. Maybe still have time to have a laugh on the touchline because our relation is very, very good. Frank is coming here to win the match and I also show them some respect by playing what I think is a strong team.
Manchester United win the team-sheet-change match against Derby 9-0, as Frank Lampard names an unchanged side for the first time.
There’s some top-notch sunset action going on tonight:

This recently came through from the Press Association:
Paul Pogba has been told by manager Jose Mourinho that he will never captain Manchester United again, according to reports.
Preparations for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup match against Derby were disrupted by claims that the club-record signing’s tense relationship with the manager has reached a new low.
Pogba was not pictured with the United squad ahead of the third-round tie and was reported by the Times and ESPN to have been told earlier in the day in front of the squad that he would not skipper the side again as he does not embody what the club is about.
United were not able to comment on the matter when contacted by Press Association Sport, but the incident was expected to be broached with Mourinho before or after the match against Derby.

Here’s Paul Doyle’s interview with Oxford’s Cameron Norman:
Updated
Hello world!
As it happens I was at Derby’s impressive training ground yesterday for a chat with the even more impressive Frank Lampard. His managerial chops remain unproven but he’s unusually eloquent, good-natured and generous with his time, and in all respects precisely the kind of manager journalists warm to.
So far Derby seem to be responding well to his presence, and by all accounts were excellent against Brentford on Saturday. Mason Mount scored again, his fifth of the season in all competitions. When I read Simon Hattenstone’s excellent interview with Kevin Keegan today, and saw his comments about the current England team – which he says has “the same problem that England have had for a long time since Gazza went. Where’s your Eden Hazard, your David Silva, your De Bruyne? Where are they? There’s an orchestra there, but nobody to conduct.” – my thoughts immediately turned to Mount (though there are other potential candidates).
Last season there were eight goals and nine assists in 29 Eredivisie matches for Vitesse Arnhem, although he turned 19 only in January. He’s an excellent prospect, and Lampard seems confident in his ability to play at international level. Lampard also suggested that he’d play today – “I don’t want to heap huge pressure on him in terms of [this game] because Mason Mount will play at Old Trafford more times than just tomorrow,” he said. “He’ll play at all the top grounds.” – and it will be interesting to see how he performs. Here’s Andy Hunter’s interview with him from earlier this month:
Lampard might also choose a few other youngsters, including Harry Wilson, the 21-year-old winger, on loan from Liverpool, who also scored against Brentford, and Jayden Bogle, who turned 18 only in July and has emerged as Derby’s first-choice right-back.
Plus Manchester United are also playing, so there’s that. Anyway, here’s a thing on Lampard’s reunion with Mourinho, and welcome:
