A dramatic game ends all square. Jamie Vardy put Burnley ahead (yep) and then scored two equalisers.

NO GOAL! Leicester 2-2 Burnley

It’s offside! I need to see a picture of Sean Dyche’s coupon right now.

GOAL? Leicester 2-3 Burnley (Wood 94)

Chris Wood has scored in the 94th minute - but he might be offside.

Full time: Watford 1-1 Newcastle Jacob Murphy misses a great chance to win it at the death for Newcastle, who should have won but thought they’d lost when Josh King scored a late goal that was subsequently disallowed for offside.

DISALLOWED GOAL! Watford 1-1 Newcastle Josh King sets off on a topless lap of honour after thinking he’s scored the winner for Watford, only for VAR to rule it out for offside.

Everton 2-0 Norwich Ben Godfrey is denied a goal against his own club by a brilliant save from Tim Krul.

Leeds 1-1 West Ham Liam Cooper makes a fine block to deny Michail Antonio. West Ham look the likelier winners at Elland Road.

This is the Premier League table as things stand. Even allowing for some relatively kind fixtures, it’s been a brilliant start for Rafa Benitez at Everton.

Leicester 1-2 Burnley The Sky Sports pundits can’t believe that Leicester haven’t been given a penalty. Dwight McNeil fouled Timothy Castagne, apparently, but VAR wasn’t interested.

GOAL! Leeds 1-1 West Ham (Firpo own goal 67)

West Ham have equalised! Jarrod Bowen’s hopeful shot takes a big deflection off Junior Firpo and beats Illan Meslier.

Leeds 1-0 West Ham Mateusz Klich has missed an excellent chance to make it 2-0, sliding wide from 12 yasrds.

Still no second-half goals in the Premier League. Burnley, Newcastle and Leeds are on course for their first wins of the season, while poor Norwich are losing again.

Here’s a very happy Dean Smith reflecting on Aston Villa’s superb win at Old Trafford.

Disallowed goal! Leeds 1-0 West Ham Tomas Soucek thought he’d equalised for West Ham, but it’s been ruled out by VAR for a foul by Michail Antonio on Illan Meslier.

PENALTY SAVE! Dundee 0-1 Rangers Jason Cummings has missed a chance to equalise for Dundee, hitting a poor penalty that was saved by Jon McLaughlin.

No second-half goals in the Premier League, though Norwich’s Mathias Normann has forced a really good save from Jordan Pickford at Goodison Park. Everton still lead 1-0.

Here’s more on Alaves’s famous win over Atletico

Full time: Spezia 1-2 AC Milan

Peep peep! Brahim Diaz’s late goal continues Milan’s terrific start to the Serie A season. Their first goal was scored by Daniel Maldini, the son of Paolo, who was making his full debut.

Half time: Dundee 0-1 Rangers Joe Aribo’s goal has put Rangers ahead, and as things stand they are top of the table.

Half time: Leeds 1-0 West Ham Richly entertaining fare at Elland Road. Raphinha scored and hit the post at one end; Illan Meslier made three high-class saves at the over.

Half time: Leicester 1-2 Burnley Jamie Vardy scored at both ends, and then Maxwel Cornet’s cracking volley restored Burnley’s lead.

Half time: Watford 0-1 Newcastle It could be more for Newcastle, who have dominated at Vicarage Road and lead through Sean Longstaff’s sweet strike.

Half time: Everton 1-0 Norwich

Andros Townsend’s penalty has put Everton ahead against the bottom club Norwich.

Leeds 1-0 West Ham Illan Meslier makes his third terrific save of the half, this time from Pablo Fornals.

GOAL! Spezia 1-2 Milan (Diaz 87)

Leicester 1-2 Burnley The goalscorer Maxwell Cornet has gone off with a hamstring injury. I’ve just seen his goal and it was as good as it sounded, a beautiful swivel-volley that flew past Schmeichel at the near post. The technique was immaculate.

GOAL! Spezia 1-1 Milan (Verde 80)

Spezia have ruined the Maldini fairytale - Daniele Verde has equalised with 10 minutes remaining.

“Leeds fans will likely know better than me (and you?) but a left-footed Pires is a good comparison,” says Neill Brown. “Both play with their head up, both tend to glide rather than endeavour, both are quicker (and bigger) than they appear, both are constant threats.”

I’ve been watching quite a lot of Pires recently. A sheer delightful footballer if ever there was one. The more frantic the game, the more serene he was on the ball.

GOAL! Leicester 1-2 Burnley (Cornet 40)

Burnley are back in front! Maxwel Cornet, Burnley’s big summer signing, has scored with a banging volley from Matej Vydra’s cross.

“Raphinha’s strike was particularly impressive, as the ball came to him quite slowly and slightly behind him,” says Neill Brown. “It looked like a well-placed assist and I love that type of finish. Both teams look really confident which is making for a good match.”

He reminds me a little bit, especially in his first-time finishes, of Robert Pires. A left-footed version, obviously.

GOAL! Leeds 1-0 West Ham (Raphinha 19)

A goal has been coming at one end or another, and Raphinha has scored it. It stemmed from a mistake by Tomas Soucek, apparently, and was a typical Raphinha finish, curled into the far corner with that whipsmart left foot.

GOAL! Dundee 0-1 Rangers (Aribo 16)

Joe Aribo has put the champions ahead at the Kilmac Stadium. An excellent team goal, by all accounts, and as things stand Rangers are top of the table.

Leeds 0-0 West Ham Another great save at Elland Road, this time from Lukasz Fabianski to deny Stuart Dallas. It sounds like quite a game, which makes it doubly irritating that we can’t watch it.

GOAL! Leicester 0-1 Burnley (Vardy own goal 12)

Jamie Vardy has scored this time - at the wrong end. A wicked corner from Westwood skimmed off his head and flashed past Kasper Schmeichel.

GOAL! Spezia 0-1 Milan (Maldini 48)

What a moment this is: Daniel Maldini, son of Paolo, has scored on his full Serie A debut! It was a fine goall, too, a thumping header from Kalulu’s right-wing cross. If it stays like this, Milan will go top of the league.

Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not happy with Villa’s goal, and it’s easy to see why when you look at the replays - Leicester had two goals disallowed at Brighton last weekend in identical circumstances. Oh VAR, so much to answer for. But I suspect his complaints are mainly born of frustration at a pretty poor United performance. As defeats go, that was a sore one.

Full time: Alaves 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Peep peep! Victor Laguardia’s lusty header gives Alaves a famous win over the champions Atletico.

Half time: Spezia 0-0 AC Milan Milan haven’t had a shot on target.

Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City And here’s Jacob Steinberg on a statement victory from Manchester City.

Manchester United 0-1 Aston Villa Jamie Jackson is at Old Trafford for us this afternoon. Here’s his report on a stirring victory for Villa.

Today’s results mean Liverpool are the only unbeaten team in the Premier League. They play Brentford this evening, with the chance to go three points clear.

I’m going to take a quick break before the 3pm games. See you soon.

Alaves 1-0 Atletico Madrid Just over 15 minutes remaining at Mendizorrotza, where Alaves still lead the champions Atletico.

That was a stinker of a game for Man Utd. They lost Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire to injury, Bruno Fernandes took the worst penalty of his life (probably) and they looked very disjointed in attack. They need Jadon Sancho to settle, and fast, because at the moment there isn’t enough wit in the team.

Full time: Chelsea 0-1 Man City

Manchester City have ended Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season. They were hugely impressive at Stamford Bridge, and could have won by more. Will Unwin has reaction to that game.

Full time: Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa

Peep peep! That’s an outstanding victory for Aston Villa, who were too dynamic, too smart and just too good for a lacklustre Manchester United.

Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa We’ve just seen a replay of Hause’s goal, and there’s an argument that Watkins, who was in an offside position, was impeding de Gea. There’s an argument for everything these days, and we might hear more about that. But let’s be clear: Villa have been the better team and deserve their win.

FERNANDES MISSES THE PENALTY!

Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa You couldn’t make this up. Fernandes took the penalty ahead of Ronaldo - and then JaapStammed it into orbit!

There’s all sorts going on before the penalty is taken, with Emi Martinez particularly animated about something.

Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa: PENALTY TO MAN UTD! Cavani’s header hits the outstretched arm of Hause, and Mike Dean points to the spot.

Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa de Gea won’t be happy at being beaten at his near post. But though it’s a poor goal to concede, Villa deserved reward for a quite superb away performance.

GOAL! Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa (Hause 88)

Villa have snatched victory! Douglas Luiz curled a corner to the near post, where Kortney Hause got away from Cavani and flicked a very clever header that beat de Gea!

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa United make their final change: Edinson Cavani replaces Scott McTominay.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa What a chance for Villa! McGinn roared past Lindelof down the right and played the ball square to Buendia in the area. He teed up Ramsey, who had a clear shooting chance... and then slipped over.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa A change for Villa: Emi Buendia replaces Danny Ings.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Greenwood has a shot blocked by Hause. The opportunity came from a spectacular driving run through the middle by Wan-Bissaka of all people.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Now Pogba misses a half-chance, toebunging wide after a good pass from Fernandes. For a 0-0, this has been highly entertaining.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa de Gea makes a fine save from Watkins, who zig-zagged past Varane and McTominay on the edge of the area before rifling a shot towards goal. de Gea dived to his right to punch it away.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa After 10 minutes of denial, Harry Maguire finally accepts his calf injury and leaves the field. Victor Lindelof replaces him.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa McGinn is booked for a gratuitous hack at Fernandes. That wasn’t a million miles from a red-card offence.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa United are having a decent spell. Fernandes plays a good pass through to Greenwood, whose low drive is comfortably saved by the falling Martinez.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Now there’s a penalty appeal at the other end when Maguire falls over after a tussle with Konsa. Mike Dean isn’t interested. Konsa took a risk but I don’t think there was enough contact for a penalty.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa McGinn bursts away from Maguire and is clearly pulled back,, but Mike Dean doesn’t give a foul. There’s an argument, even though it was only just past the halfway line, that McGinn would have had a clear goalscoring opportunity had he not been fouled.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa A decent effort from Pogba, who curls just over the bar from the edge of the D.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa It’s been all Villa since half-time. Harry Maguire has a calf problem but is staying on the pitch for now.

Half time: Alaves 1-0 Atletico Madrid Alaves, who went into this match with no points from five games, lead the champions through Victor Laguardia’s early header.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa A fine pass from Pogba releases Dalot on the left. He looks up, assesses his options and then hopelessly overhits the cross.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa It’s been a strong start to the second half by Villa, who had a penalty appeal caught in the throat because of an offside against Watkins in the build up.

There’s been a goal at Stamford Bridge. Will Unwin can tell you all about it.

Updated

“Are you watching a different game to me?” says Tony Herbert. “‘Outplayed’? At best an even, though exciting game. 15v4 attempts on goal in Utd’s favour. Hardly outplayed.”

You’re right, outplayed was too strong. I still think Villa were the better team in the first half though.

Half time: Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Another chance for United just before the break. Fernandes’s corner was flicked on at the near post and headed just wide by Pogba. It was a good, instinctive effort from Pogba, with almost no reaction time, and it drifted past the far post.

Half time: Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa The United players are starting to get frustrated. I’m not surprised - so far they have been outplayed by an excellent Villa side. But they almost stole the lead moments ago when Maguire’s header was superbly saved by Emi Martinez.

Updated

Chelsea 0-0 Man City City have had 70 per cent of the possession at Stamford Bridge, but neither side has had a shot on target.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Villa are causing United a lot of problems with their pressing, as they did Chelsea for much of the game at Stamford Bridge a few weeks ago.

Rob, do you mind if I pay only occasional attention to what’s going on in your reports?” says Charles Antaki. “I’ve just got hold of a copy of Football, She Wrote and I’m settling down on the sofa to read women’s writing on football, starting the story in 1881 and moving rapidly on. Terrific so far. Everybody should buy it. Also they should read your minute-by-minute, but I’m sure they do that anyway.”

The book looks great, and it’s particularly nice to see Kate Battersby among the contributors; I loved reading her stuff when I was growing up.

Updated

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa It’s a good game, very open. Fernandes slips his man on the right of the box and hits a low cross that eventually comes to Pogba on the edge of the area. His shot takes a big deflection and drifts wide of the far post.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Another excellent chance for Villa. Maguire gives a dodgy backpass to de Gea, who hits it straight at Watkins 15 yards from goal. He drives a low shot that de Gea saves well with his feet.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Mason Greenwood misses a good chance at the other end, shooting straight at Martinez when Fernandes was better placed.

What happened next?

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Matt Targett misses a great chance to give Villa the lead! Cash got the wrong of Shaw and slid a precise low cross to his fellow wing-back Targett, four yards from goal at the far post. He lumped it into orbit.

Updated

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Nothing much is happening at Old Trafford, or Stamford Bridge for that matter. We’ve had 15 minutes in both games.

Updated

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Villa have come to play, and have probably had more of the ball in the first 10 minutes. They’re not remotely afraid of playing the big sides away from home.

“A Premier League game rearranged because of a Courteeners gig?” sniffs Matt Dony. “What next? Put off the boxing because Scouting For Girls are in town? Interrupt the Ryder Cup so we can all enjoy an Editors show? Strewth.”

At least it won’t cost them the league title like that Rod Stewart gig in 1991.

Updated

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa Bruno Fernandes has missed an early chance at Old Trafford, walloping over from the edge of the area with his left foot.

“Today is a nice chance for both sets of fans to salute a great veteran with an unbreakable pro attitude: Ashley Young,” says Duncan Edwards. “I don’t know if he’ll pop up with a matchwinning contribution but have no doubt he’s still capable of inducing suicidal or homicidal thoughts with his protracted attempts to take a bloody throw in.”

Peep peep! And they’re off.

Preamble

Hello there. Another Saturday, another clockwatch. We’re starting early this week, a gift (sic) for which you can thank the Courteeners. They’re playing the other Old Trafford tonight, with the first support band due on at 5pm, so the match between Manchester United and Aston Villa has been moved to lunchtime. It’s one of six Premier League games we’ll be following, including the biggie between Chelsea and Manchester City. Will Unwin is your man for that and so much more.

It’s an important day at the bottom of the Premier League as well. Leeds, Burnley and Newcastle are looking for their first win, Norwich for their first point. And Leicester will hope to push things forward after their false start to the season.

Elsewhere, the champions of Scotland and Spain are in action, as are the resurgent AC Milan. They will go top of Serie A, for a few hours at least, if they win at Spezia.

These are today’s featured games, all 3pm BST kick-offs unless stated.
