Manchester United urged to target two positions in January transfer window

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown believes the club need four signings and has named the striker and No.10 positions as priorities for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to target in January.

United missed out on players like Christian Eriksen and Mario Mandzukic in the summer, despite being offered the chance to sign both and are understood to be targeting a forward in January. Juventus forward Mandzukic isn't a priority target, while United have interest in Leicester playmaker James Maddison.

And Brown, talking to 888 Sport, name-checked Maddison as well as Jack Grealish and another Foxes player — left-back Ben Chilwell — as three players who would improve Solskajer's squad.

“I think Ole will try and buy in January," he said.

"United need another striker and an attacking midfielder, that little wizard number 10. The defence is fine. The goalkeepers are fine. The ideal thing would be two strikers and two midfielders. If only it was that easy!”

Andreas Pereira, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Angel Gomes have all played as United's No.10 this season, but Brown has noticed Maddison and Grealish's performances for their clubs this season and has been impressed.

“Grealish in the last few games has come on immensely," he added.

"He can always see the pass. Maddison has always been good and he’s a threat getting into the box. These are two young English players who would definitely help the squad.”

And Brown believes United are still a big draw for players, despite missing out on Champions League football last season and currently sitting seventh in the Premier League.

“I still think United is a draw for players," he said.

"We’re still buying big players, and a lot of good English players with Harry [Maguire] and [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka coming in.

"Chilwell is an excellent player and Leicester are on a brilliant run and you can see the whole team has been lifted. But if United went in for Chilwell I’m sure he would definitely come, 100 per cent.”
