Manchester United urged to sign Leicester defender Harry Maguire

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been urged to sign Leicester defender Harry Maguire by his former teammate Teddy Sheringham.

Manchester United are looking to strengthen at the back over the summer transfer window with a central defender one of the top priorities.

Last summer the club were being linked with a move for Maguire after his impressive display the World Cup with his agent thought to be keen to get him a move off the back off a good tournament and Sheringham believes United should be targeting the 26-year-old centre back this summer.

"I think Harry Maguire is the one for me. He’s got great leadership qualities, and has a real calming influence. He’s very similar to Rio Ferdinand, in that he’s cool on the ball and defends very well. That would be a fine start from my point of view," the Treble winner told BetStars.

Solskjaer has changed United's transfer policy and this summer is targeting young British talent with the likes of Daniel James, Sean Longstaff and Aaron Wan-Bissaka of interest instead of the big name stars the club have targeted in the past.

And Sheringham is of the same mindset of his former team mate in that he believes the right thing to do is target young British players.

"Central defence is a big area where they need to find a Vincent Kompany or Tony Adams type player," he said. "I really believe they should go back to the British mentality. The core of any good, British team, comes from British players, as I see it. Over the last 20 or 30 years, if a British team does well in the league or in Europe, there’s always a core of British players involved.

"OK, Manchester City do go away from that trend, but in general they are players with a British mentality who understand what it takes to win. You only have to look at the past success of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, to see that core of British players."
