Manchester United urged to buy centre back to partner Harry Maguire

Manchester United great Jaap Stam believes the club should attempt to sign another centre-back to partner Harry Maguire.

Stam was a rock at the back during his three seasons with the Reds, helping the club win three Premier League titles, an FA Cup and the Champions League.

And the big Dutchman has been impressed with Maguire this season, but says United need more solidity in defence.

"Maguire has played well with Lindelof and then you have Bailly, Jones and even Luke Shaw who is playing as a left centre-back now as well," Stam told 888sport.

"It’s very important that you have someone next to you who you can trust."

As well as the four players Stam mentioned, United also have Axel Tuanzebe on his way back from injury, and a reinvigorated Chris Smalling, who is playing some of his best football on loan at Roma, although the 30-year-old may open to a permanent move away from Old Trafford.

But even with the array of options, Stam claims United need more: "If I was Manchester United I’d be looking for another centre-back. I’d bring someone else in even though the others are doing well.

"They need another because of injuries and that gives you options as to how you play. Ole wants to play out from the back sometimes and take risks and you need the right players to do that.”
