Manchester United urged not to sign Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against making a move for Barcelona centre back Samuel Umtiti.

Solskjaer is looking to strengthen his squad in the summer and suggested defence is still a possibility as he considers signings in all positions.

"We're looking at all positions all the time and if there is any dip in the form or attitude in players," Solskjaer said. "But I have to say the attitude of all those five (Jones, Smalling, Lindelof, Rojo and Bailly) have been brilliant."

United continue to be linked with a whole host of centre backs after Jose Mourinho did not get the defensive signing he was after last summer and one of those players is Barcelona defender Umtiti.

The France international has been linked with United on a number of occasions but Silvestre doesn't think the 25-year-old is the correct option for United.

How Manchester United should line up against Wolves in the Premier League

"Manchester United will always look to sign players with the X-factor, but I don’t see Samuel Umtiti as necessarily a Manchester United player," the former United defender told  your-promotional-code.co.uk .

"I think Eric Bailly has all the qualities Man United need in defence but United will always target the best, so who knows who might come in and they will always look to strengthen the squad. For me the focus would be the midfield.”

Another big decision Solskjaer has to make this summer is who will be handed the captaincy with current club captain Antonio Valencia set to leave Old Trafford after 10 years at the club and Silvestre believes Paul Pogba should be given the armband.

"The captaincy at United is different in the modern generation, as you need a couple of leaders in the team, but I think Paul Pogba could be the one to lead the team," Silvestre said.
