Manchester United trigger Jesse Lingard contract extension

Manchester United have triggered the one-year option in Jesse Lingard's contract.

The English midfielder was technically out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season but the club have activated a clause to keep him until the summer of 2022.

Despite the extension MEN Sport understands Lingard will still be allowed to leave United in the January transfer window if an appropriate offer comes in for him.

The 28-year-old received interest from clubs in England and Europe during the summer and is attracting loan interest ahead of the window opening later this week.

The MEN revealed earlier in the month Sheffield United are interested in signing Lingard on loan in the January transfer window as he has only made two United Premier League matchday squads this season.

Lingard has not featured in the Premier League or Champions League this season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, despite making the squad for both competitions, with his only appearances coming in the Carabao Cup.

The English playmaker returned to the United squad for their Carabao Cup triumph over Everton last week, but was an unused substitute during the 2-0 win at Goodison Park.

Lingard was an unused sub again for the Boxing Day draw at Leicester before he missed out entirely against Wolves on Tuesday night following Juan Mata's return from injury.
