Manchester United transfer news: Wayne Rooney backs former club to make move for Harry Maguire

Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has backed his old club to make a move for Leicester City’s Harry Maguire.

United are looking to strengthen their backline ahead of the new campaign, and Rooney says the Leicester and England centre-back would make for a “good signing”.

United are continuing to push hard for Maguire, with Leicester demanding at least £80m for one of their most prized assets.

But Rooney believes it would be money well spent on a player who has grown from strength to strength over the past two seasons.

“He’s gotten better, and he’s been a main player for Leicester City, but also for England,” Rooney said. “I think he’d be a good signing if they can get him.”

Maguire missed training with Leicester earlier this week due to an illness, sparking reports of an imminent move.

The defender informed the club’s medical staff that he did not feel well enough to attend Monday’s session and was granted permission to stay at home.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed his desire for Maguire to join his squad as soon as possible.
